Hi all I've got a 2005 skoda octavia 1.9 tdi (non pd) I found this wire just hanging around just wondered if anyone would know what it is

Not too sure, possibly for the gearbox speed sensor, though you'd notice if the speedo didn't work.  I'll move this to Octavia 1 for a better response.

Reverse light sensor? Probably worth a check see if they're illuminating when you go backwards. Is there anything within reach of the wire that could be the connection? 

Air flow meter since it's not got an air box because of that silly K&N.

Air flow meter has more pins. I would guess reverse light switch myself

Cheers for moving it Airflow meter is connected and in place reverse lights are fine speedo works fine and the silly KnN filter is just a temporary measure and can't see anything within reach

On my vrs there is a plug like that with some heat wrapping on it like that that plugs onto the diff housing of the gearbox,

 

Speed might still work with it disconnected as it will pick up speed signal from abs sensors in wheels
