Wider tyres? 235 40 17 on pegasus wheels

Featured Replies

Having just aquired a set of Pegasus 17" wheels for my VRS (i will be spraying them dark grey and just wanted something different from the std VRS wheels) i am now considering going a little wider on the tyres.

I like the look of wide tyres on std rims and the resultant "fat" look.

I am considering 235/40 17 as opposed to the std 225/45 17.

I appreciate the slightly smaller rolling radius will mean the speedo will be a bit optimistic but i am wondering whether i am likely to encounter any clearance issues or anything else i've not considered?

Thoughts...?

Suggests to a 2.26% change and the max they recommend is 2.5%.

A change of 14mm in rolling diameter.

I'm no expert but my guess is it will be fine.

Are you going to tell your car insurer that you intend to fit non-standard tyres on a non-recommended rim size or just risk giving them an excuse to refuse a claim?

I don't think that answers the OP's question!

Not how I read the first post...

235 rub like no bodys business, I had them on a set of 18s I got from another car on my old Octy2. As soon as anybody sat in the back, the tyres were rubbing on the arches on uneven roads. I took them off after I wore a dangerous shoulder on the outer edge, deciding to be safe rather than risk a blowout at speed.

Were the wheels the same offset?

I'm just surprised that the tolerance is so tight on a vRS that you get rubbing. I can fit 245s on my Scout but obviously there's a lot more height/clearance compared to a standard Octavia nevermknd a vRS. A smaller radius would give just a little more leeway before the shoulder made contact.

Slightly different offset, but after I changed back to 225 the rubbing issue was solved and I could fully load the back of the car finally.

Thanks for the responses, particularly Mannyo - looks like i'll be sticking with 225's

I'm going 235 on an 8" rim, et51. I hope they don't rub. Many on here run 235 without issues.
