Changing the break lights is a pain

Featured Replies

One of my break lights was out. It's a bit of a fiasco changing it, isn't it ? I had to remove the whole light cluster from the car to get into it, its lucky that I bought a set of torx keys by accident when I meant to get alan keys, a year or two back ! IT was easier on my mark I fabia, where you could get at the bulbs through the boot.

It's the only bit of design that's annoyed me so far. I love the practicality of everything else.

On the other hand, I'm guessing this new system is more waterproof :) .. the MkI fabia leaked water into the boot if it rained hard !!!

just don't let the plug drop in the bodywork

also while you had the cluster off I would have changed the sidelight capless bulbs as well, and make sure you use good quality branded bulbs or my experience is they silver and dim a lot more rapidly and blow quicker

My car has the torx key in the foam inset of the spare wheel along with various other bits. While a bit more involved than just sticking my hand through the boot, I didn't find it a very difficult or time consuming procedure.... which is a good thing as the sidelight bulbs go bad quite a bit for me. I consider myself lucky that I've had the same set since March of this year. But if historical trends are correct, next month I will need to change them again. And I'm not using generics either. Philips or Osram. Mechanic suggests it may be moisture ingress into the cluster. Not bothered investigating further, as since I buy w5w bulbs in bulk from amazon when they are on sale, 50p a bulb every 6 months will take a long time to balance out the cost of a new cluster or even the repairs on the existing one.

Good luck if you end up needing to change one of the front parking lights. That really is a b******d.

I didn't think to look in the spare wheel ... I expect I have a Torx key there too, if that's standard. I'll check :) I've changed a headlight, in the swively module, that wasn't too bad. I'll consider myself forewarned on the parking lights, ta

front sides are a bitch to get out, the holders are a push friction in the light assembly, only way I could get mine out was a pair of pliers on the wires and use the slam panel as a pivot point to lever them out carefully trying not to damage the wiring

I actually like the way changing the rear bulbs is designed in the Roomster. Yes, you do need to unscrew two Torx screwes (with the tool found in the spare wheel well, at least on Model year 2011) and remove a connector, but after that you can move inside where it is warm, well lit and dry (because bulbs always fail when it is dark, cold and wet :) to do the actual bulb changeing. Once done, clip back the connector and attach the two screws again.

In that same foam piece, I've got another thingamajig which is basically a wire loop with a right angle hooked piece sticking out. That is what I used for the front side lights. I did have to use the torx key to undo the wheel wheel protector, stick my arm up through there and my other hand from the top. but that hook slots into the side light holder and with your finger in the ring it yanks out with a firm tug. Putting it back is the easy part.
