Octavia MK1 1.8T - P1200 code

Featured Replies

HI Guys,

I got an Octavia 1.8T last week. Everything seemed great with it, 1 old man owner, 33k on the clock, all the history to prove it. I've driven it for a few hundred miles and the Engine light came on. /fail

Private sale so no comeback :(

Took it to a VW/Skoda/Audi independent, they checked out the codes

P0113

P1128

P1200 - Turbocharger: recirculating-air solenoid valve - Mechanical Fault

P1602

P1570

P1548

P0102

Basically they said the turbo would need replacing since the solenoid inside couldnt be changed (something like that). Having a read around these forums, other threads mentioning P1200 people seem to be talking about dump valve/wastegate.

They quoted me £720+VAT for a new turbo. That would be over 50% of the cost of the car, so probably a no go. Is that a legitimate diagnosis/quote? If it does need a new turbo I imagine I can get a recon one for a lot less?

Any help appreciated

Well some of those codes are power circuit/immo related, so get those cleared first.

That could be from having the battery disconnected.

You need to clear all codes really and see what comes back to give somewhere to start.

OK, so some of those will be explainable by leaving the side lights on on Monday and running the battery down. Had to get jump started as it was totally dead. They cleared all the codes, I guess I'll to see if the engine light comes back on.

So are you saying they're full of **** then? Should they be clearing the codes and asking me to come back? I could buy the cable and connect my own laptop for less than it cost then to diagnose. Any particular one recommended?

I got a cheap code reader off ebay for a tenner and its always stood me well. Does all the basic stuff.

Similar to this one:

Bought the Torque app for my phone too and a bluetooth OBD2 adaptor after that though and its much easier, but it does involve having an Android smartphone!

As for the fault codes, that to me suggests that it could be something to do with the recirc valve or the actuator on the turbo? Further than that dunno unfortunately!

As others, clear the codes and see what comes back. These are great cars, but quite capable of throwing spurious codes.

Solenoid inside a turbo??

I'm no expert but

Get the battery fully charged, check the fluids. All ok? Start the car and let it idle and check rpm, smells, fluids.

Get an obd scanner to see what error and when.

If you can afford to have the car immobilised for a few weeks, you'll might be able to find somebody local and willing to help

Where are you based.

Just looked at the other codes, and as others are saying, clear them down and see what comes back. with so many wiring related codes, and a low recorded mileage, I am wondering if the plenum chamber vents are clogged allowing water to contaminate wiring connectors in that area.

That said, clear them down, see what returns, and if necessary do a block scan on the engine to see what is logging.

Thanks for the responses. I've got to run the car G-Slave, I need it to get to work.

Only had it a week like I said, but there's nothing obvious different now and when I got it. Idles at 1100 for a bit after ignition then drops to ~900rpm steady. I do have the starter motor issue which I've read is quite common. Few fine spatters of a clear liquid out of the exhaust - nothing out of the ordinary. The guy at the garage said the turbo was whistling - I'm not sure - not an expert. Bit of a chirrup if you rev it up and let go - which is the wastegate afaik. There was a noise that can best be described as 'a hoover in another room'. That lasted about 30 seconds, went away, came back for 10 seconds then was gone. Wasnt the radiator fans - they were idle. Temp readings OK.

No smells or leaks I can see.

I'll probably order one of these then

I have 2 Android devices.

Live in Solihull near Birmingham

That all sounds completely normal.

Get the blue tooth adapter and torque and make your own investigation's.

Does sound dv or n75 related.

Hoover sound is the secondary air pump it should only come when engine is stone cold for roughly a minute then another blip after about 3 mins normally

Drive sensibly bit in the meanwhile install boost gauge and configure android torque to scan for errors every so often. Find a place to dyno it

Bet turbo is fine, just needs fresh oil and gemtle braking in

I've now got the scanner and Torque installed. The only error code that comes up now is

P0170 - fuel mixture too lean (something like that)

Go into the settings and get it to show LTFT (long term fuel trim)

Report back

Hi David

I don't appear to have LTFT as an option?

The actual error was P0170 - System Too Lean (bank 1)

I have Fuel Trim Bank 1 Sensor 1,2,3 when I want to display Chart/Graph or Dial.

thanks

Go on the real time screen, press and hold on a blank spot, then add display and add the two fuel trim ones, I can't remember which one exactly is LTFT.

Your after something like this

Hi mate. I don't have LTFT or STFT as options? I have Fuel Trim Bank 1 - Sensor 1, 2, 3, 4 and Fuel Trim Bank 2 - Sensor 1, 2, 3, 4.

I stuck em all on a couple of pages and the only one that reads anything is Bank 1, Sensor 2, which is reading 99.2%.

You have unmetered air entering your turbo. Between your maf and turbo intake you will find split rubber or loose jubilee clip.

Or your fuelling leans out in which case high rpm and load could cause limp or knock

Like I said, I put all the sensors for both bank 1 and 2 on and the only one that reads anything is Bank 1 Sensor 2. I'll have a scout around like G-Slave suggested.

cheers guys.

I think I got why you can't get it.

Did you you try an add that dial with the app connected and engine running ??

If not then you need to, I'm not entirely sure what the sensor one does but the fuel trim is calculated by the ecu rather than run of a specific sensor

LTFT is a good indicator of whats happening under the bonnet.

Its the two in green which as said will only appear in the list when the car is running or maybe ignition on will do post-8833-0-66157000-1380906682_thumb.pn
