metal on metal knocking after lowering

Featured Replies

I have just lower my vrs 25 mm on ap springs and dampers. Handles nice but a lot of knocking. Did not buy top mounts and bearing! Guessing it is the topmount as the drivers side had to rush and buy top mounts, as was knackered. But passenger side seemed ok. :(

Your drop links may be too long!

Did wonder that but only 25 mm and dpm said would be ok. Knocks if steer harshly from one side to the other

I had the same issue, fitted both front drop links and it was fine, around £11 each - http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=178

Now my bushes need changing i think, it's not that bad, only noticeable when doing under 5mph, more of a creaking sound rather then a knocking

Due for MOT in November so i'll get it checked then.

I already have those exact drop links and they are very good, been on about a year. I checked them again and no play

Remove the top mount cover under the bonnet and push down on the car and see if there's any play there, the garage told me that mine had a lot of play and that was causing all the knocking

But they got the wheel off and checked everything and it then turned out to be one of the drop links, i checked the top mount and there was actually a little bit of play there but it seems to have mysteriously disappeared (i think they left something loose which they quickly fixed while doing the drop links)

Tried that was no play in that :(

No idea what i could be then, get it checked by a professional..

Keep the thread updated, would be interested in knowing what is causing it.

Well my mate teaches apprentice mechanics at college so he's going to get to the bottom of it :)

I've also lowered by 25mm and getting a clunking noise from what i think is the driver side supsension! Had it for about 6 weeks now had it to 3 different garages and all have found nothing! i havent seen them check the top mounts yet so i will have a look today at work! its driving me crazzzzzy

Now realising the false economy of not replacing these kind of things while you are in there ? Harsh comment, but true.

I replaced both top mounts, it was a bit pricey but you have to think over the long haul what it has really cost you, not what it costs you upfront and trying to save a few quid on the job.

Oddly my arb links seem to be fine so its not common to expect them to be knackered?

This was one thing I didn't change as they seemed to be solid and servicable, and easier to change out.

I replaced pretty much everything with the suspension and I get a knocking, just gotta live with it

Yes this is true I would now advice changing topmounts at the same time . But has only cost me time as did it myself .

Ive also got a low speed knock front the front.

Realised today that the steering arm touches/knocks on the anti roll bar. i replaced the drop links for new ones when fitting.

Am i correct in thinking ill need shorter drop links?

Would that lift the roll bar and stop the contact?

If it catches will need shorter drop links, how much is it lowered by ?

If I'm lowered 25mm, I weigh about 15.5 stone and have a passenger who weighs around the same, it will be like driving a car that is lowered a lot more wouldn't it?? so would I need shorter drop links..
