Diesel fuel filter change

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My car is a 2011 fabia scout 1.6tdi (70).  It's just about up to 40k, and I've just done the oil, air, cabin filter changes.  I was going to have my local (and trusted) garage do the brake fluid and fuel filter change - as I normally make a mess of these..

I picked up a fuel filter from Blade Bristol, as I'm using skoda parts as per warranty (£37 though... ah well) - the chaps there have told me that unless the car is hooked up to a diagnostics machine, the engine will "blow up".

I don't really want to pay Skoda over £100 per hour for the labor on this job, and would prefer to use my local garage.  I was just wondering if anyone could give me a little insight into why the car needs to be hooked up to a machine, and if it's likely that most local garages will have all the right kit?

thanks.

I would be incline to ask why? and would they put that in writing :), I suspect they will decline both requests as they know it is tosh

we have loads of people on here who do their own servicing on 1.6tdi

we had a discussion about changing fuel filters on here, I said I never prefill the filter on my old 1.9 tdi PD diesels and another user said the high pressure pumps on the 1.6Tdi common rail engines are more sensitive to lack of lubrication as the fuel system pulls the fuel from the tank and refills the filter and purges the air

so change the filter, pre fill it with fresh diesel reconnect pipes and start up

£37 seems a bit steep for a fuel filter, never had one cost over £25 before even from skoda, perhaps someone on here can confirm the price

did you reset the service indicator? and may be worth getting your local garage who did the brake fluid to scan it for fault codes just to be sure no errors

Thanks Bluecar - they didn't actually explain, they just said it had to be or else...  To be honest I'm not keen on Blade Bristol Feeder Road - I'm not on here to bash dealerships, as the other South Bristol site staff are all very helpful, but I never get a straight answer from them (Feeder Rd) unless it involves them getting my money.

I think I'll give my local a call in the morning - thanks for the tip on the service indicator reset, I'll get them to do that too!

the service indicator reset was in the manual

Resetting Service Interval Display

It is only possible to reset the Service Interval Display, if a service message or at

least a pre-warning is shown in the instrument cluster display.

We recommend that this reset is completed by a specialist garage.

The specialist garage:

done this many times on my old roomster, mk1 Octavia and mk1 vrs when doing my own servicing

from memory, push and hold clock adjust button while you turn ignition on, keep button held for about 5-10 seconds and the service display will flash then release button, and turn slightly one way or other to get the service type then once you have right service type push button again

someone will come along and confirm or correct me, or you can get someone with vagcom or similar to do it for a donation to their beverage fund

if the dealer wants more than £10 for doing it walkaway, as you see simple couple of minute procedure at most
