We spend our time reminding ourselves of the negatives that surround us - this one goes to the ground with me as a very lucky point in my life. How that remained balanced and didnt cack itself into the engine I do not know!

Jesus

I think I might order a new turbo preventively  Only done 107k ish on my original from new so far ...

Got half way through pulling it out (feel near dead at this point) and felt for play - very little up and down and no in and out.. crushing as I had bought a replacement. Thought may as well continue - pulled out to find the compressor blades chewed to pieces - shazzam!

The horror that the nuts put my hands through this was the original turbo. I am on 125k. If I was being fastidious I would notice the boost being choppy, I thought however it was due to the compressor catching the inlet housing as when I had my clutch changed at Unit18 their comments were that my map is too aggressive and you can hear the turbo racing away. Enough to melt the front edge of the blade tips? Best get onto Boeing about this one!

To be fair they are still in one piece though - but better to replace than be sorry

Ouch, glad the turbo got to you sooner rather than later mate! Happy motoring :)

Where did you get the turbo from ?

I'm wondering about where to get myself, I was thinking of a stock PD150 or PD130, the standard cars quick enough for me.

(If I REALLY want to go fast I'll get out on the 955i and fly past all yer asses remapped or not lol)

I should have gone for a turbo dynamics when they had offer on 6mths or so ago, prices seem to have gone up quite a bit now on new?

Is it worth a recon unit from somewhere respectable

I'm playing it by ear since if Skoda came out with the right car/right offers I might see myself going new, or my dad might upgrade and I'd get his Octy 1.8TSI which isn't a bad motor (and lot newer than my Mk1).

Then again it won't be half as fun as the Mk1 vRS and wonder if I'd keep it still anyway for what it owes me / and is now worth (nothing) and the 1.8TSi has the appeal of a comfy slipper (and looks like one)

I got my turbo from Dan in this thread, it was good condition - OEM. You can get the fun you want from a map only - you have a bike, you dont need a fast car.

If you plan to keep her for the life of the chassis & engine (400kmiles) then yes a refurb would be best. Standard turbo will last around 120k est.

If you have the cash handy I think its worth buying a turbo if your worried now. They are £150 - £180 second hand with reasonable mileage. Will look to sell mine on if you plan to go hybrid.

Nick

Where have you found a second hand turbo for £150/180 nick I can't find much on eBay?

Check the forum mate, I let mine go for £165 posted and threw in one of the boost pipes for nowt. Not to bothered if I could have made any more money etc tbh, just glad that Nicholas caught his turbo sooner rather than later, that's good enough for me :)

Heres a question for you lovely lot, you know when companies suggest a core restock surcharge, do they take used KKK in return or is it only like-for-like ? That said I would like to check mine definitely has a KKK (in case they stuck a Garrett on lol unlikely)

Wonder how easy it is to see/check as I don't have an inspection camera....

If it's a standard car it'll have a KKK no question.

You should just about be able to see the identification plate if you remove the undertray and go in from behind the driversside wheel, taking the lower boost pipe off should make things easier

Most companies will want a like-for-like swap to give you full value back, some will take a KKK back but given the difficulty in rebuilding them over a Garrett (given the 1 piece housing on a KKK) they tend to do a reduced refund.

That said it might be worth speaking to AET turbos in Normanton - when my turbo(s) blew they were the only company interested in touching the KKK unit.

They were talking about rebuilding it with stronger seals and bearings but same internals (meaning same as standard power but muuuuch longer life expectancy) for around £300 plus a donor unit (of which i have 2 in my garage if you wanted one ;))

As said though there is the best place for picking up a "spare" as plenty are being replaced with PD150s or hybrids now.

It's just a matter of timing.

I've bought 2 off members, both with around 60k on them, and together they haven't come to a total of £300

Nope, that's the impeller not the exducer, the impeller doesn't get hot enough, that damage is caused by debris or abrasive grit getting past the air filter, do you have an aftermarket filter by any chance?

Now the thread is going doing down that line I'm glad that I have always used the genuine OEM paper filter ! I'd probably already have blown mine before now by the sounds of it if I hadn't

reman-tec.com do refurbs also, any one got any decent verdict of them?

If it's a standard car it'll have a KKK no question.

Yeah I gather this from the point that BLT is apparently such a PITA for a Garrett ??

There is no direct replacement part from Garrett by sounds of it ?? It will require some kind of EGR deleting? and that could cause problems with the EGR tripping the ECU light unless its mapped out or something ?

Bloody hell what a PITA I think I might just end up playing turbo russian roulette at this rate.

Pasty, your idea of getting good used KKK (from a BLT) is starting to look more attractive

No standard VAG, perhaps in a previous owners hands it did? Checked the inlet pipe, small amount of oil from the cam cover breather but that is all.

Yeah as I found out hard way the manifolds are ever so slightly different on the later BLT engines due to having an EGR cooler and separate anti shudder valve.

The Garrett was from the mk4 Golf which I think had been replaced with the mk5 by the time the BLT engine was put in the Fabia.

As said you can do it but you do me to remove the EGR and have it warning light "mapped out".

I don't even think you can leave it in place and blank the holes like I did on my ASZ due to the different set up, but don't quote me on that :S

Just keep an eye out on here, as said I picked my ASZ one up for £130 and the BLT one for £160.

If one comes up for a sensible price snap it up and put it in the garage "just in case".

When the inevitable does then happen happen it's much better to go "here's one I prepared earlier" than have to panic buy a new turbo for 5 times the price.

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right section , but I have a quick question , how loud is the 'siren' noise ...... Mine sounds slightly like a siren but only if I listen really carefully with the window down .... It's not loud at all I might just be being paranoid and wanna make sure my turbos not going to go
