Advice on some accesories and upgrades please

Featured Replies

Hello to all!

I have just bought a 2010 Superb estate. 2.0 Elegance 170 DSG

I need to buy mats as the drivers mat is worn through and recommendations for a lipped boot mat that won't interfere with the load raills in the boot would be welcomed as would info on the best place to obtain the cargo nets.

I spoke to a local VAG indy specialist before I bought the car (they have looked after my wife's Audi A4 for 10 years) and he says the car is easily chipped to 200bhp which would also likely improve MPG. Although its not something I'll do right away any feedback on this would be appreciated.

There is a buzzing noise coming from the front end (resonace) at just above tickover. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing it before I go taking it apart?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

In Microsoft speak, it's not a fault, it's a feature! "That's how they come from the factory" :wall: There are very few Superb II owners who have not had this buzz. It is sometimes caused by a slack connector in the air ducting under the bonnet. In other occasions, it's from the dash, and some padding placed between plastic surfaces can help - usually accessed from the fuse box cover area (right hand end of dash)

For mats, I'd recommend that you look at ultimate carmats.

For boot liner, the official skoda superb rubber one is good. It has a very small lip around the edge, as well as ridges along the length. It fits in between the partition rails, and very high quality rubber matting.

The buzzing noise from the front could be the famous air intake assembly vibration. If it sounds like a gruff exhaust note at about 1500-2000 rpm then get a friend to idle the car in that rev range, whilst you pop the hood and hold the air intake firmly. I fixed mine using layers of aluminium foil, and my dealer fixed it properly for me by replacing the intake elbow joint under warranty. See the pics in my post "gruff exhaust".

I was told that "all of 'em make that noise" on my test drive, which turned out to be BS, as it was fixable on mine.

By `pop the hood` I take it you mean `lift the bonnet`?

I think he actually meant "shoot the gangster".

I'll do one better. 2010 estate, 40000 miles. Bought second hand.

I took the car to the dealer (major franchise in Belgium, your typical Audi/VW/Skoda glass palace) because of this "intake rattle".

Master mechanic; "No it's not the intake, it's a pulley from the cambelt, it has to be replaced"

I then mentioned I had extended warranty (2+2 by WeCare, from the Belgian importer). He frowned but still persisted, it's the cambelt.

Cambelt replaced.

Rattle persists.

Junior mechanic; "doesn't sound like the cambelt at all, let me hold the intake while you rev the engine - there you go"

Total cost 18€'s for a new intake cover, and a huge bill for an unnecessairy cambelt change the dealer is stuffed with :giggle:  I did ask for a declaration to be written in the service history, "wrong diagnosis caused cambelt change at 40000 mi"

My advice, find the buzzing sweet spot (was just below 1500rpm on mine) and get a mechanic to look around the engine. Should find it if it's the air intake.

Or go to a dealer if you still have warranty, maybe you'll get a free cambelt ;)

If you're from the US and A reading this, then pop the hood and listen whilst a friend hits the gas pedal, and use aluminum tape.  If you're from the English speaking world, then you should open the bonnet using the bonnet release catch located in the left hand side foot well of the vehicle, and listen whilst an acquaintance pushes down on the accelerator pedal until the engine revolutions increase to the 1,500 to 2,000 revolutions per minute range.

Please don't go popping a cap in anyone's ass.  If there's trouble in your 'hood, call the police.  If there is trouble in your neighbourhood: call the local constabulary.
