Help - New owner starting issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have recently purchased an SDI skoda from a trader for the wife last week.

When I purchased the car it started up fine, drove around and purchased it.

Today I noticed that the need for the temp gague was not moving.

At cold, car seems to struggle to start, have to give it a few goes for it to crank and start.

once warm car starts fine.

after some prodding around in the engine bay i managed to find the coolant sensor and it has been unplugged,

I plugged it back in and now the car doesnt start when its warm. takes a few good seconds for it to come to live.

it splutters and coughs.

does this me the cts is faulty ?

(one would assume if its faulty and unplugged it would start first time, everytime)

ideas

  • Me thanks for taking my call yesterday. Further investigation and spending 50£ I am at a loss why this car does not want to start. Clearly it has a defect and is not fit for purpose. Spending 750£

Take it back to the trader and tell him you want it sorted FOC.

The CTS would be a starting point, not overly expensive and quite straight forward to replace.  Cold starting could be due to glow plugs, but whether the glow plugs are required to operate or not may rely on the CTS reading.  A fault code read may provide more clues to the cause of the problem.

There is a way to bypass the CTS whilst starting the engine by wiring in a 5 pin relay, which when energised by the starter motor breaks the CTS circuit, however this is a bit of a work around and should be a last resort.

What you should be doing is getting the trader to sort this out, warranty or not, it's not unreasonable to expect the temperature gauge to work, so the Sales of Goods Act should apply.

+1 coolant temp sensor . 7quid will get you one to bang in and try

i know i could go down the lines of soga but if its a cheap little fix i cant be asked with the hasstle!

the temprature gauage works as normal since plugging in the CTS.

7£ ? is that from the dealers ?

No it'll be a factor part and will work enough to know its the issue

I thought i best keep every one in the loop!

Well I purchased a new CTS today and installed it, plugged the loom back in and it refused to start.

Crank after crank, nothing.

I decided to replace the fuel filter as well ... Still nothing, i can smell fuel eventually battery when dead,

So i decided to charge it for a while.

I check relay 109, took it apart, no dry solders. reseated all the fuses.. still nothing..

after alot of additional cranking it did eventaully start.

no codes, actually the engine light doesnt come on. (i donthave a code reader.)

Maybe a sticky stop solenoid on the pump perhaps

Maybe a sticky stop solenoid on the pump perhaps

Where on the pump ?

Pump screws do have yellow marks on them.

Maybe it has been replaced

Thanks

ediiittt....

Further to that I have spoke to the trader.. he states I signed a trade reciept etc. "sold as seen".

Not willing to contribute to costs. Trading standards website states no such thing as sold as seen

The yellow marks should be original, my old car has been them on the pump.

As for the dealer he taking the mickey.

more info!

I dont know whats wrong with this car..!

- with the CTS connected, car just cranks and does not start. (i have fitted a new one)

- Disconnecting the CTS, the car cranks and starts after about 5 seconds of cranking.

what the hells going on.

Have you reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery, shorting the terminals for a few minutes then re-connecting?

  • Author

Not tried that.

on the cluster the engine check light does not appear when you turn on ignition on

The glow plug lights doubles as the CEL.

You need to reset the ECU after changing a sensor so the ECU can recalibrate itself.

Reset the ECU and if the car's still no good you need to return it to the trader because you have a 30 day warranty under law.

Ecu reset done.

Cts plugged in left.

With battery leads unplugged.

Now just chugs, and turns. Does not want to start.

messaged the trader.

Me

thanks for taking my call yesterday. Further investigation and spending 50£ I am at a loss why this car does not want to start.

Clearly it has a defect and is not fit for purpose. Spending 750£ on a car I would expect it to last more that 50 miles!

Faults are, car does not start, and the eml does not appear to function.

Please see, http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/brighton-hove/con1item.cgi?file=*ADV0003-1011.txt

my statutory rights are not effected by the sold as seen receipt.

I only see three ways of this being resolved, 1 you take and repair the car, or 2 you take the car and provide me with a refund, 3 I have the car looked at by someone and they attempt to repair and you pay them directly.

Please come back to me on what action you would like to take.

Thanks for being understanding.

Trader

Hello. I would like to clarify my position on this matter as mentioned yesterday. All vehicles are sold as seen. Customers are given the opportunity to test drive and inspect as they see fit. I am not a motor dealer, I am a part time trader, and at the point of sale you are informed verbally and on the receipt that no warranty is neither given nor implied. I will stand by what I said yesterday and do not wish to fall out, I will happily introduce you to the cheapest mechanic in Leeds.

Me

since you are a motor trader, you are liable for product for a reasonable period of time. Please see link provided by me.

General wear and tear times are excluded and I've already spent money on the car in the effort of trying to get it working.

If it was a consumable item, I wouldnt be bugging you.

I am not interested in falling out so I would like to reiterate that no such thing is as sold as seen is possible in law.

You are a full time or a part time motortrader, the end point is still the same.

I still have the v5. The car does not start, I have covered no more than 50 miles in it. It has been parked in my drive,

If the wife had drove the car around for several weeks and for it not to start then, I would take it on the chin. But since the cars coolant temperature sensor has been unplugged I assume it was unplugged to disguise some other issue. The engine management light does not work, it should power up on ignition, it doesnt.

I am not interested in paying for repairs my self.

What's the latest on this ?

Trader

I have read your messages mate. I very clearly state at the point of sale that there are no refunds, no exchanges, no guarantees, no warranties. I'm not been horrible but I make so little on the cars I can't. If you weren't happy with the terms stated on your receipt quite simply you should of not bought it.

  • Author

MeI did not notice the temperature sensor not working. Inspection several days later revealed of the car had the sensor unplugged.

It's not fit for purpose, the words stated on the receipt do not affect my statutory rights.

If is know that the car had the problems I wouldn't have bought it.

Under my rights, you can attempt repairs to the car at your cost, or refund the full ammount.

I ask you to reconsider your stance.
