Any reveiws of the Canton Upgrade?

Featured Replies

From the video.... "Acoustic filters dampen engine noise" suggests a certain level of active noise suppression from the head unit. The engine is nice and quiet, so perhaps there is something going on.

Amazing contribution Blanes. It's the speaker upgrade for the MK3 Octavia (that's a car). Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4

  • If he says its no different to the standard non amplified/EQ'ed Canton system, he must have a couple of cotton buds stuck in his ears!   Its a BIG difference and Ive posted about my back to back ses

I'd love Canton if I ordered one but whilst 400 quid isnt alot of money in isolation it would buy you a few extra toys otherwise. Also if its anything like the MK2 the factory 8 speaker system ought to sound pretty good anyway.

For instance on a TSi you could order heated seats, heated washer jets, MDI and the colour computer for approx 30 quid more than Canton.....thats what makes the choice a bit difficult for me...would I forgo it for a few more toys? I honestly dont know. I love my music but would i love heated seats etc more??!

Having just had a demo over the weekend, I am glad I have ordered the Canton, despite me continuously playing with the stereo settings etc there was no way I could get any decent bass out of the speakers, so I am hoping the Canton will give better bass than a standard model, the speakers are not a patch on the Mk2 standard set up, I am not a bass head junkie I just like music to have a nice bass to it, and the standard speakers over the weekend didnt match up to what I would of expected for a newer model!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just covered over 1000miles and I have had to now turn the bass down! Well worth the extra. My vRS came with this extra as I bought a show room model. Lucky?

I have a problem with the Canton, it seems like the Sub is out. Driving along with the wife the other day we agreed that the stereo sounded much like a standard set of speakers. The sound focus was off, turning it on improved the sound a little but still, turning up and down the sub woofer from -9 to +9 doesn´t make any noticable difference :-(

Anyone got clues to what to check ?

Make sure you are playing a track with plenty of low end bass.

I can tell the difference between a poorly produced/mastered track and a good one.

A sub does not increase bass as such (as that is quite a wide band), it will increase the really low bass around 20-200Hz or so.On a 3 channel equalizer like the Canton, Bass is probably defined as 20-1000Hz. So there is a fair amount of 'Bass' that goes through the door speakers and not the sub.

A lot of Compilation CDs I have don't have really good bass reproduction as they tend to be cheaply mastered, especially if the original recordings were analogue (AAD or ADD cd's).

I find Scooby Snacks by Fun Lovin Criminals, or the intro to Down in the Tube Station at Midnight by the Jam have some good low end bass that you can really feel with a sub.

A quick question to those with the upgrade, can the SUB be quickly/easily removed?

Nope, it's very firmly attached to the rest of the car.

Why would you want to remove it?

There is the additional amplifier under the passenger seat, you can't just unplug speakers.

Are you thinking of changing it for a different sub?

Are there any detailed technical specs of what you get with the Canton?
I didn't realise there was an amp under the seat - does that drive all of the speakers or just the sub?

You get a sub, additional speaker in the top of the dash area and an amp.

I think it's entirely possible that the Canton will become much more expensive in future, it's quite the bargain on paper imo (I haven't received my car yet ;) ).

The sub is connected the the amp via a fibre optic cable I think, so removing it and replacing with another one may be a challenge.

As far as I know it's a passive sub so just optic cable is not enough.

Ahh yes it will also need power, I should have just said the sound gets to the sub via fibre optic. Lol!

Where does sub sit? Is it visible?

It's in the boot on show, fits nicely in the corner next too wheel arch.

Currently I put my bike in the boot of the S-Max (Cant reach the roof without a small pair of steps) and thinking I could do the same with the Octvaia but wouldn't want to damage the sub with the bike potenitally moving around, we also have a dog & kids and no doubt alot of stuff will get thrown in the boot over the years so if the sub is open & not protected it could get easily damaged.

I assume the sub is quicly and easily disabled for when the dog is in the car?

Its all thoughts at the moment. My head say's 'yes get one' but I'm weighing up all the pro's/con's before going for the test drive

Sub is enclosed, can't see it getting damaged easily

It's off to the side in the boot, so should be fairly safe and if you have the variable boot floor it only sticks up above that by a couple of inches.

Cheers, They didnt have an Octavia with canton in stock at the weekend so didn't know where it is etc.

I don't think I would spec the variable boot floor, I removed it from all my previous Octavia's & never used it but its nice to get an idea of how the sub would integrate into the boot.

Plenty of pics on the web! Just google "Octavia Canton" and you can see both versions (with/without the variable boot floor).

I am not dissatisfied with the Canton, I just think the possibilities to adjust the settings are too limited (or I haven't found out how yet).

I have been fidling with a couple of things:

- The Canton Soround Sound has to be set to either 'Front' or 'Driver' for the volume to get rich. Setting it to off make the sound flat, esepcially the sound from the two treble speakers in the doors get muted.

- Boosting the 'Bass' on the equalizer doesn't really make a difference when sitting in the front seat at least. It makes no difference if it is set to -9 or +9. Should this be so ?

- First I thought the sub to be broken, but when I opened the boot I could hear it thumbing, It is almost impossible to hear from the front.

- When you have lowered the volume beyond the 'default setting' and you put the DSG in Park, it turns the volume up to default level instantly  :bandit:
