Des - no it was kind of a serious question ... Is this the kind of engine that needs a rebuild every couple of thousand miles - it looks like it....

Are you planning one like this for your Octy? Can't imagine the shell would take 600bhp without bits falling off - would need lots of strengthening.

You post all these pics, but nothing to tell us what they are, or what your plans are. You mustn't be surprised when we ask questions :D :cheers:

Footnote: Yes I know I look dumb asking all these questions but at least I act as a whipping boy for all the others who'd like explanations as well :p

I suppose it would depend on what you used the car for and how hard you pushed it, wouldn't have thought it had the longevity of an OE engine.

It isn't a dumb question!

The wastegate controls how much exhaust gas flows through the turbine part of the turbocharger (and hence how much boost is generated).

If the wastegate is closed, all the exhaust gas goes through the turbocharger, making it generate lots of boost pressure.

On VW 1.8T engines, though, the boost pressure is selected by the ECU. To do this, it controls the wastegate, which allows variable amounts of exhaust gases to rnter (or bypass) the turbo.

Hmmm - during my remap, Mike showed me a valve which he explained controlled the boost pressure by means of an open/shut ratio controlled by the ECU. However, this valve was in line with rubber hoses, which I find hard to believe contained hot exhaust gases. I therefore believe this valve was on the cold air side of the turbo, and was not the wastegate. Am I wrong?

PS I read up on wastegates and your explanation agrees with what I read - the wastegate is a bypass valve on the hot gas side of the turbo, i.e. it allows hot exhaust gas to bypass the inlet stage of the turbine.

No, thats correct. The wastegate is operated by boostpreassure and that valve controls

how much boost the wastegate sees. Called N75 valve and is available in a few versions

that can be used to change the amount of surging or boost peak the car has.

you can adjust the n75 ther eis a little screw on it... not sure which way to turn though or the actuall effect? if someone knows i will try it?

Since that seems to be the main component of the remap I'm loath to mess with it. I don't want to make any gross changes to the boost pressure etc. after Mike spent so long getting it right :)

It's probably not a good idea to screw around with the screw - all it does is get the ECU upset. See here

so if i have surging already turing the valve down may help then? (assuming that as per the link turing it up causes surging?

Was the surging caused by your remap, Paul? If so IMHO you would be better getting the map tweaked for the particular throttle angle/RPM where the surging occurs. If you alter the N75 valve you are changing its effect over the whole spectrum of throttle angles/RPM, and may have negative effects on other parts of the map.
