Saloon roof bar capacity?

Featured Replies

I am going to be in the market for a Superb in the next 4 weeks. My problem is that I am a kayak angler and will often be carrying two kayaks on roof bars with a total weight of about 75kgs.

I would prefer a saloon but I am unsure just how good roof bars are on saloons. I have read that they have a capacity of 100kgs.  Are they really secure with that load? Do you trust them?

I have always been wary of saloon roof bars but if you can reassure me then I will buy with confidence.

However if it is not a safe option I will have to dig a bit deeper and 'reluctantly' go for the estate version.

Thanks.

I have a twin door saloon and regularly carry a thule roof box. One is 230cm long and the other is 200cm long (I have 2 roof boxes).

There is no problem even when they are fully loaded. I also regularly carry 3 bikes on the roof.

Never had a problem. Don't see how having an estate will increase the load capacity and general ease of use??

The roof length on the twin door is massive.

I use thule foot pack (754) with a 127cm wing bar.

Hi I have a twindoor and fit altera roof bars and roof box, bars are an extremely good fit and seem very strong, never had any problems

Quote from the owner's manual:

"The maximum permissible roof load (including roof rack system) of  100 kg and the

maximum permissible total weight of the vehicle should not be exceeded.

The full permissible roof load cannot be used if a roof rack system with a lower

load carrying capacity is used. In this case, the roof rack system must only be loaded

up to the maximum weight limit specified in the fitting instructions."

I use a heavy Mercedes roof box. I have no idea how much it weighs but I can't lift it on my own!.

I reckon you'll be OK. You should worry more about whether the Kayaks act as a sail!!!
