Hi Scouty peeps!

 

Am considering replacing my 1.9 Elegance with a 2.0 Scout Manual. Have seen one on an 08 plate with 141,000 on. So, before I go and have a look, I have a couple of questions:

 

1) What sort of standard spec was on offer around that time? (In the picture I can see auto-lights, climate control, Stream MP3, MaxiDot, MFSW, can't see if it has HIDs as the switch is obscured.)

2) DPF?

3) Taking it for a run: what to look for?

4) Bodywork: what to look for?

5) Anything else?

6) What is it like towing? What's the maximums for it on towing? (braked / unbraked)

'08 will be a PD engine 140 with DPF.

Xenons can usually be identified by looking at the headlights and seeing if there is a rectangular section on the outer edge if the main light.

Privacy glass from B-pillar backwards, auto lights & wipers, dual air con all seem to be standard.

I think towing is 750kg or at least slightly more than a standard Octavia.

Unless its very cheap (under c.£8k) I'd keep looking as I've seem some pretty good examples of Scouts around that age with lower mileage.

Thw DPF issue on 2.0 PD seems a little vague. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Škoda_Octavia#Engines_2) the BKD and AZV didn't have them. Mind you, I do a fair amount of motorway bashing, so hopefully it shouldn't be a problem.

 

 

Edit: Scout is apparently 8V, AZV is 16v

Scout is a BMM (or BMN) engine I believe.

The PD Scouts have a BMM engine and a DPF. I had one on loan for a while and it did need the occasional motorway run to clear the filter and warning light, but even in London, it was fine.

 

The towing capacity braked is more like 1600kgs - but check the online handbook.

The Scout engine has the BMM code and does have DPF.

I'm guessing but is the AZV a petrol engine?

The only thing to watch for over the standard Octy is that the haldex has had its oil/filter changes every 40k miles.

 

Otherwise the standard list of things to look for applies:

DPF

DMF

Air con

drop links are known to rattle with high mileage

rear washer/water in spare wheel well

suspension geometry (4 wheel hunter alignment)

Cam belt and water pump is due every 80k miles

DSG oil change every 40k miles if applicable

ABS (Their is a known common problem that can affect certain versions of the ABS pump)

 

My 2008 Scout is on 104k miles (72k in my ownership) and has so far had the following done:

4 wheel alignment - rear tyres were wearing quicker than fronts

Cam belt & water pump at 83k miles (Better safe than sorry)

haldex oil & filter change at 83k miles (Dealer missed this completely at 40k)

Rear washer pipe has split behind dashboard (Not got around to sorting this yet)

DPF light on approx. 7 or 8 times in 72k miles. Cleared nice and easily with a bit of high rev driving

Front discs & pads at 70k miles

rear discs & pads at 90k miles

 

This might be tempting fate but no problems as yet with DPF, DMF, ABS or Air con.

Unfortunately on the pre-FL Octavia's it is impossible to determine if xenon's are fitted by looking at the headlights. As the pre-FL doesn't have AFS (cornering function) it doesn't have the rectangular cut-out next to the projector lens like the facelift does.

 

As it has Maxidot and the multi-function steering wheel then the original owner has at least ticked a couple of options boxes, hopefully they ticked xenon's too. You need to check for the absence of the manual headlight height adjuster thumb wheel next to the light switch.

 

On an 08 with 140,000+ miles the alloys will almost certainly be badly corroded...

If they aren't then they've likely been refurbed and you'll have lost the polished (but weak) surface finish on the spokes.

 

As has been mentioned all diesel Scouts have DPF's. The 2.0 TDi PD140 fitted to the pre-FL is a SOHC 8V with a DPF, non 4x4 OCtavia's with the 2.0 litre diesel engine were DOHC 16V and didn't get a DPF. All CR140 engines (fitted to the very last pre-FL Scout's and all FL Scouts) get the DPF.

Is there any way to know when the 4wd is doing a bit more than a 98/2 split?

 

Are there any problems in remapping {Shark} / DPF removal on a Scout?

 

Am planning to take the laptop and grab a VCDS Auto-Scan just to see if there has been anything untoward going on.

 

My local friendly dealer said to make sure the Haldex service has been done every 40k, as well as checking the A/C etc.

 

No DSG (4x4 and auto boxes, no matter how smart, just don't seem to appeal to me) :) How do I tell about the DMF? How much is SMF conversion?

Ooo..............do they have hill-hold control?

Facelifts do have hill hold - I'm not sure about earlier cars.

Pre facelifts have hill hold, haldex system kicks in when it needs to ( no indication except plenty of grip and lack of wheelspin.

Can recomend shark remap, makes it a more responsive drive, had ours done at 2k miles and still smiling

Yes to hill hold, yes to shark map, no to smf, I believe this is not available for the 4x4.

I believe the DPF removal requires the transfer box removing to get to the DPF so can involve additional labour.

Ours is a facelift 10 plate PD on 93000, great car, had the DPF delete done by Jabba, Whoever you use will transform the car but make sure they gut the old pipe & not fit a new pipe as visual inspection for a dpf is or soon will be a mot check, if the old pipe is there but gutted it still looks OK.  On ours it was transfer box off as Scouter posted but still worth it IMO  Ours ate a rear diff but only a few days after a service so might have been a dealer induced issue but warranty covered it anyway, egr valve went, had a few wheels on warranty as the laquer peeled but doing it again so its a common fault. I think Powder coating is the only long term answer. From previous experience on a highly tuned mk1 Octy 4x4 the Haldex is bomb proof. MPG wont be as good as your previous car but its heavier & taller.  IMO a cracking car

I have a 2008 Scout TDi.

 

It's got the 8v PD engine. Scouts have DPF's. Average about 42mpg over 3 years I've had it. I do an oil and filter service every year as it only costs about 50 quid to do it myself. Bigger stuff like the Haldex, cambelt can be done by a local indy. The 2.0TDi is so common most garages have quite a bit of experience with them.

 

Bodywork wise, the vulnerable bits seem to be the silver trims on the lower bumpers and the plastic underbody shields that cover the brake lines etc.

The engine/sump guard is thick steel, weighs a tonne, has Bentley stickers on it and is very difficult to damage.

 

Standard spec is the same as Elegance with a few extras. It'll have Maxidot, xenons, dual zone climate, heated mirrors etc. About the only thing missing cf L&K is leather.

 

About the easiest way to check the Haldex is to throw it round a roundabout and accelerate hard mid bend. You'll be able to feel the drive moving front to back.You can get a nice 4 wheel drift going. Or you could drive onto a field and see if you get stuck or not.

 

The alloys will be corroded. It's just the way they are. I hope it's only cosmetic as mine look a state.

 

Never tried towing with it but I think it would probably be very good.

 

My DPF light has never been on. I think regular long motorway journeys help lots in that respect.

 

MOT advisories so far have been:

Brakes - discs and pads replaced at 65k.

Tyres - it wears tyres very evenly (doesn't really do wheelspin; 4x4) and they last about 35k for me.

Front shocks - some light oil residue ?leak.

What was described as "some DMF noise." I hope this isn't imminent bad news.

 

The only thing I don't like is - it's not a Range Rover.

There's a few Touaregs around for similar money. They are slightly older, but better spec'd (leather etc)

 

What's the feeling around those?

Is the main body "just an estate"? (No offense to the current Scout owners)

So if I found a dead L&K estate, I could transfer seats etc?

(Am only looking at ones with MaxiDot and HID at the moment anyway ;) )
