New backbox fitted to the Golf and a question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had a hole in my backbox so got it replaced, cost

Nice stuff man, I'm thinkin' of getting my backbox replaced with a more freeflow unit...

As long as you can guarantee that the car is in excellent condition, and it looks pretty inside AND outside, it's value, in my opinion, should go up. Besides..it's a classic Golf model. Classics are always a keeper for higher value :)

I'd thought about doing it up, you know, sports exhaust, filter, aftermarket steering wheel, lowered, bigger brakes, wheels etc.... but ultimately, i am happy with the car as it is, the performance and handling is more than adequate for me and my limited abilities :D and after spending all that money on all this stuff, at the end of it, nobody really seems to want modified cars - or at least, they could possibly be used to knock money off. It seems to me a very clean, totally original Golf would not only be extremely easy to sell but should at least be worth more than what I paid for it, provided i get it up to spec.

Getting it "mint" might well cost you more than the gain in value you'd get from doing this though...

Rob.

I dont want to gain anything really - i intend to keep the car as long as it proves to be relatively reliable, as I really like the way it looks and drives. Its just i was thinking longer term, i might recoup more money than if i'd spent an equivalent amount on modding it...

keeping it standard and back to a high standard will increase its value and make it more sellable.

Thanks for the thoughts. I knew it was too good to last though, the dreaded shudder is back :(

Last time i am pretty sure that it was the HT lead, but now i dont know what.... I was accelerating up a sliproad, into 5th at about 75 or 80, and on the gas again, car starts shuddering fairly violently, let off the gas and back on, same... and again, gone...

Cant figure this thing out sometimes. I've looked at the HT lead and also the other leads surrounding it and they seem fine.

Mechanic pointed out a few months back the subframe mounts would need doing sometime in the future, but would that cause this?

What else could it be?

whats the fuel pump like? maybe worth a look and did they do a check to see how the car was running ie CO2 etc?

  • Author

They didnt check for CO2, but the mechanic thinks that fuel pump (he didnt actually look at it) sounded a bit too loud / strange and he suspected it would go soon.

i would get that checked, seems a possible cause mate

staff member, mod? whats the difference?

In a nutshell Mods have a big red button to ban people and stuff. Staff members don't. :)

Paul, It sounds like your none too happy with the Golf atm :( Tell you what though give me

LOL' date=' i dont think so :P

To be honest, i was getting disheartened with it, but my skin is thickening to it now, i no longer am surprised or get particularly upset when the next problem rears its ugly head. ;)

The way i see it now is that eventually all of the problems will be found and dealt with and it will probably be quite reliable after that (usual caveats for it being 15 years old and 130k miles apply of course).[/quote']

If fuel starvation is causing this problem, get it sorted pronto: lean fuel eats engines!

My mate is still telling himself that his MKII Golf will eventually be reliable, once everything is sorted. Trouble is, he's back at the beginning again, with a third aircon failure, and 2nd gearbox rebuild!

I thought my B V8 was a money pit, but it's nothing compared to a Golf. The inevitable gearbox failures seem to be the most expensive problem, but there's quite a few other weak points that cost a fortune.

Only had two problems with my valver - the ISV & ignition module. Once they were replaced, it ran like a dream for the 5 years I owned it.

i had mine for nealy 5 years, i spent a bomb on it but most of that was thru choice and not failures etc. the car had done 170k miles at least and its gear box only needed the wee bush repair kit and it felt like new!
