Garmin Nuvi

Featured Replies

I have one of these bought off that auction site. It has no instructions but yesterday started to tell me that it needed its maps updating. There's an SD card slot but nothing else. Anyone give a clue ?  Download maps onto a card (from ? ) and then somehow update the unit or ....?

you can connect it to your computer with its USB charging lead, and go on garmins site if you want to update maps, but you will probably have to pay for the privilage ... is it worth it? up to you :)

I have just been through this wih my son's old Garmin Nuvi that ceased working because te maps were out of date.

I am no techie but it was not difficult.

As per Sharkrider above, you just need to connect the Garmin to your computer with a USB cable. The Garmin website will identify your device and enable you to download updated maps. It is free. It took me about 2hrs, but bingo, everything is sorted. One tip: make sure you are aware of the maps you want to replace. My son's old Nuvi just had UK and Ireland..........henc I had to select this option from the maps on offer.

I know it sounds obvious but it wasn't to me!

Hope this helps.

You can just click though the "maps out of date" screen and it will continue to work as normal

I have had a Nuvi for about three years.  I bought a lifetime map update card via e-bay (from a Toyota dealer, it turned out) for about £45, it's about £75 if you get it from Garmin.  I get 4 map updates a year for as long as I have the satnav.  It takes about 2 to 3 hours to do a full UK/Europe update.  For the price I reckon it's good value.

You may need to put a micro sd card in the slot as sometimes the new maps are bigger.  I had a gash 8gb card I put into mine and that's fine.  I also put a bit of tape over the slot after I put the card in, just in case.

Which nuvi is it out of interest, as there are many? The maps size increases every time now effectively out dating some older devices. And SD slot rather than micro SD would suggest a fairly old device. If you have to pay for map updates, I would look on the likes of Halfords to see if its better value to pay a bit more for a brand new one with lifetime maps and a warranty.
