My fuel gauge never reads a full tank, always 2 notches from full - I fill  up until the pump clicks

I've had this problem but in French cars. One car it turned out that the fuel receiver/sender unit was faulty and the other car it was because the key had been left in the ignition. ... not on though.

Unfortunately it's a pain to diagnose as you have to have the fuel tank at empty for the garage to look at the unit.

Does the needle go up after you have driven around for a while? Does the light come on at the correct time as the needle could be set wrong on the dash? ? Ie read empty when it is 1/4 full and minus 1/4 (if it could) at empty if that makes sense.

Mine shows full when I fill up, and then a short while later drops to 3/4, well before I could have used that much fuel.

How empty are you when filling up? Are you stopping on one click or trying again and again?

If very low when refuelling you get a false full cut off. Happens on every car I've ever refuelled
