shark antenna

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the standard screw-on antenna with a shark-type one found in the cars equipped with GPS navigation units and more important, how easy it is to do so?

I had replaced the standard antenna 2 years ago with a shorter one, but now, black paint has faded significantly and it looks quite bad plus radio reception has worsened in some areas.

I was looking at this: http://www.carsystems.pl/shark-triplex-antenna-phantom-black,id24.html  but it looks as If I will have to run wires all along from the roof to the front end of the car, is that so?

i had my shrak fin aerial replaced, under warranty, when it failed on my Octavia.( not sure if its the same on Fabia) but it took them 6 hours  to replace...

They said they had to remove all 6 pillar covers, drop the roof lining, top of the dash off just to be able to re-run the wire from back of SatNav  to the roof....

Hope that helps.

No way I'm going near it if that's the case. Maybe if the connectors were already near the antenna but not if i have to take apart all those pieces and run the wires... Guess I'll get another short aerial then..

Skoda part no is 6R0 035 849

I put one on my Citigo Sport. Nice and short :)

Fits all the later Skodas and no loss in reception.

How long is that one? Don't want to go too long otherwise I can put back the original, wouldn't make much difference.

newbie69, That unit you have posted a link to doesn't actually have a radio aerial in it: It is for Telephone, GPS and a parking heater. The sort of cars these types of antennae are fitted to generally have the FM/AM radio aerials built in to the window glass somewhere on the car.

You are best getting a stubby mast -to guarantee best results I would get a proper VAG one from the parts department at your local dealership - they are not expensive. Please be aware that there a several different thread sizes in use, so you need to check that you are getting the right one.

I have changed the roof aerial unit in a Fabia hatchback to fit a digital radio: It's not that big a job -you will have to drop the head-liner, but not remove it completely. There is a plug to connect the aerial base at the back edge of the roof. The wiring goes down along the wheel arch and along the floor of the car. However I ran my additional wiring along the roof. Took me just over an hour to fit the aerial and the radio.

I think it's 200mm standard length. Posted Image

Thanks for the replies. The original Skoda stubby aerial is shorter than stock but still around 20 cm it seems.

Since the part linked in my 1st post doesn't include an FM/AM aerial I am wondering where the actual aerials are fitted in those cars. Are they built-in to the windshield as greenstripe says? Because there is a built-in one in my car as well, though I don't know if it's the same as the ones in shark-fin versions or if it works equally well.

Bottom line is: Skoda stubby aerial still seems too long,  and I would like to replace it with something more discreet, either a shark fin (if it could do the job) or a really short one (like those cheap ebay parts that unfortunately fade out after 1-2 years)...

The aerial in the windscreen is for the FM diversity function -to find out if you can cope just using that one alone, just remove the aerial mast from the roof.

I've got the shark fin on my Tech and I've fitted a stubby aerial which I bought from a Citreon dealer off EBay for £6 delivered.

It's a genuine part which also fits BMW, MINI and VAG group cars and is made of the same black rubber as the one already fitted.

It's about 60mm long and is a straight swap for the longer standard one.

It looks so much better fitted to the shark fin, makes it look more like an Audi aerial.

I'll see if I can post a picture of it to see what you think.

They do this aerial set up as standard on the Yeti but it looks like the OEM stubby has been replaced with an even shorter one.

Thanks Stormchaser, that's exactly the same as my Monte, although my stubby bit might be a bit shorter.

There's no loss of reception as the amplifier is built into the shark fin unlike the cheapo ones found on some eBay listings.

Well, that could do it! Now off to google the correct part number/type...

Gazbull, you fitted this yourself and how easy it was?

newbie69, the shark fin is fitted as standard to the Tech as it has the sat nav fitted, I only changed the radio aerial bit.

The standard one just screws off and the stubby one screws back on in it's place.

I don't know how easy the shark fin would be to fit, the headlining at least would need to be removed so it certainly wouldn't be a 5 minute job, just glad Skoda did it for me !!
