Fully functioning Yeti towbar electrics...read how it was finally done

Featured Replies

Took delivery of a new Yeti Adventure, the dealer fitted a Westfalia bar and full electrics ( he subed this out to a local fitter).

Took delivery of the vehicle and  the fuctionality was not as expected, the trailer picture on the Satnav screen was missing and the reversing sensors were not disabled when the caravan was hitched, and the trailer stabilty program was suspect.................same old story.

A quick phone call to the dealer was met with a reponse from the Service Manager " The lack of full functionallity was expected as you did have have the towbar prep fitted in the factory"

Explained to said manager that the Westfalia harness was exactly the same as the factory prep harness, He denied it and said the the ECU could not be programmed to give full functionality..........................do I suspect a lack of dealer knowledge and training.................well yes.

A heated discussion  took place with said manager who remained firm in his opinion.

So I phoned  both Westfalia and the subcontractor, both very knowlegeable and helpful, both confirmed that my views were correct and the dealer was wrong........

A visit now to the dealer armed with my knowledge and the Westfalia installation manual ( back page gives the dealer coding information)  and had a meeting with the Sevice Manager and the Master Technician. This resulted in Service Manager saying " We will give the coding a try".

15 mins later I had a Yeti with fully functioning towbar electrics. :giggle:

Moral of the story, we the customers are not stupid and Skoda should educate its dealer network.

Oh and by the way the electrics are 13 pin with split charging.

I suspect I'm going to have exactly the same conversation with my dealer in a few days. They persuaded me to order without a tow bar and get one fitted after. I then read all the tow bar posts and tried to change the order to what I originally ordered. Failed as it was within two weeks of the build date. Dealer is now getting a westfalia fitted. I expect: the programming not to have been done, the plastic hatch not to have been cut out properly, no hatch cover to be supplied, none of the interior trim to fit correctly. Having had to 'educate' the dealer about the issues with bypass relay installs and how intelligent the yeti's electrics are, I await delivery with low expectations.

I'm amazed that this is still a problem! I could understand it when I bought mine as it was still a recent new model with lack of product knowledge by the dealers. It has cropped up so many times since then that I would have thought it would have prompted SUK to send an advisory to all their dealers. It causes so much angst that customer satisfaction can be lost forever.

I would suggest anyone contemplating having a towbar fitted to read all the posts on here about the subject and go to the dealer fully prepared. Some dealers are fully clued up but I suppose that as Service Managers and Technicians move jobs they take their knowledge with them.

A better option would be to have the factory fit towbar. With hindsight this would have been preferably to me but wasn't available at the time.

PS. Independent towbar fitters are more knowledgeable about this and most can even do the recoding.

I'm amazed too.  I don't know of a SINGLE person that have had a towbar fitted at a dealer (and always even then by a third party) that got home with the software having been done.  Allams had no clue how to do this on mine either. Gizmo68 had to sort mine out. It's really utterly pathetic.

Allams know how to do it now Johann! I compiled all the information from here, printed it out including the pix you posted of the trailer display gave it to them and said "I'll collect it when you've corrected it." I received a phone call 1hour later "It's ready Sir".

RESULT.

Well Faintree Mtrs certainly knew how to do it, first time!

I stand corrected then.  SOME dealers know now how to do this. :giggle:   But the Yeti has been on sale since 2009...  the Octy even longer with the same software and yet they still don't know how to do this?! Pathetic.

I had the same problem when i bought my Yeti here in Sweden. The previous owner had fitted a westfalia towbar but the electronics was not coded correctly. I told the local Skoda dealer to fix this when they coded one new key. They managed to code in the key but not the towbar... I ended up buying an VAG-COM just so i could fix it by my self... :-)
