94 Fav,Handbrake auto-adj release

Featured Replies

I started out to identify 'binding rear brake' (MoT advisory).  Expecting to replace the cylinder. So many on ebay I wanted to look and measure.

Anticipated probs with the Allen screws and hose connection but patience was rewarded and they were slackened and re-tightened.

However the brake is very different from Haynes in that the drum is removed via the stub(?) axle and I struggled to get the drum back over the shoes expecting that the shoes would 'centre' by applying the footbrake - not so!

I have the brake locked on and only one hard pulled click on the h/brake lever.

So, please, how do I release the adjustment.

Also when I come to replace the cylinder is it necessary to remove the shoes? In present state there seem to be c.5mm gap between the pistons and shoes, would that not be enough wriggle-room.

Or is that gap more to do with the 'over-adjusted handbrake

Before installing the drum you need to push upwards the springed vertical wedge. Your handbrake is obviously overtightened, normal operation means 5-6 clicks and the car doesn't move when trying to drive in 1st gear or reverse. Drum brakes self-adjust each time you pull the handbrake all the way. I assume there are 4 nuts (2 for each side) that set the handbrake cables tension, similar to clutch cable.

You need to make some room when replacing the brake cylinder. Take out the two springed dishwashers and pins and slide downwards the entire brake assembly.

Hi adurer, thanks for the help.

Present situation. Drum is on,brake locked.

Do you mean; I can restore some h/brake cable slack by undoing the cable conxn at the underside of the in car handbrakelever?

Or are you saying it needs to done within the drum.

Haynes says to release h/brake adjstmt.

I can't see any thing like that.

Do you recognise my brake set-up as normal or is it non-standard. If standard, maybe you could show a diagram.

Thanks

In order to 'unfreeze' the rear brake, try to raise the inner vertical springed wedge first by inserting a flat screwdriver through one of the holes of the drum. If that doesn't help, then you need to give more slack to handbrake cable by adjusting the nuts under the handbrake lever (in car).

Hi adurer,

many thanks for your help. Car up& running.(sorry I missed part of your earlier reply "Before installing the drum you need to push upwards the springed vertical wedge)

Now seeking the cylinder and getting confusing messages about what does//doesn't fit .

I see them advertised variously from £2~£20 with varying part numbers. Can you tell me the fail-safe identifier.

Original has '19' stamped on, the pistons have flat ends.

I am thinking cyls are not 'handed'  L & R and that the hose connectors would be a standard size and pattern also the size and pattern of the Allen screws would be the same.

Perhaps I am missing something

According to ETKA, for FAVORIT and FORMAN the part number is  6U0611053B. You have 19.05 mm diameter wheel brake cylinders.

Favorit PICK UP, FORMAN PLUS, and PRAKTIK have 22.2 mm diameter wheel brake cylinders (part number  6U0611053A)
