H, V, W, Z, Y? Which Tyre code for vRS Winter Tyres.

Featured Replies

My head is spinning.

I've been looking (no trawling) through loads & loads of winter tyres and am now completely confused what tyre speed rating I need for the vRS.

Can someone with some experience guide me through this minefield, I mean the original tyres are rated Y, but that's 186 mph (300 km/h), I don't need that, would H - 130 mph (210 km/h) be suitable for it or would you recommend a higher rating?

Your advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Mine are  " H " rated.  (205/55/16 Kleber ).

I informed my insurance company, no extra charge but noted on their system,

mine are "H" rated 130mph max.... my insurance cmpany says no charge too...

Does it matter what the load index is, that's another one that's baffling me!

Thanks.

The load index is more for 4x4 and van tyres than on car tyres,

Just look at the tyres you already have and see what index they have,

Agree with the above. 'H' is sufficient unless you plan to do 186 mph in the snow that is.

H is for 210km/h

V for 240km/h

W for 270km/h

You wont find any winter tyres with an Y or Z rating.

Having a wintertyre that is limited to a lower speed has another advantage. Rubber is less hard and therefor the (extreme) handling can be better than the same tyre with a higher speed rating.

In a land with speed restrictions and a limited time using the winters, I would always go for a lower speed rating.

In Germany it is different, from October till March/April there are still a lot of days where we can go faster than the limited 210. That is why I choose V rated winter tyres.

Mmm, well as I won't be driving to Germany anytime in the foreseeable future or within the winter months, it would seem that the "H" speed rating would be more than sufficient for my needs and save me some cash in the process.

Thanks for your advice.

I just got some H rated tyres as I am unlikely to do more than 120mph during the winter in the UK.
