VRS burning smell

Featured Replies

After driving my vrs recently I can smell a burning plastic type smell. Had a poke around the engine bay but can't see anything. No dash lights up, oil and water temp normal.

Any ideas? Hope it's not a burning dsg box smell!

I had similar on a 1.9 tdi 130 seat ibiza, it was low water level in the heating circuit, if that is any help...didnt have any warning light either, and it wasnt until it got cold that I noticed the problem when I noticed smell.... which is similar to weather change we are just having.

How did you find this out / solve it?

looked at heating/air/con  reservoir, noticed it was very low, then filled up with water....simples.

filled the heating reservoir up with water....simples.

Sounds pretty technical! I will investigate haha. Cheers

Is it maybe just still newness, (how many miles done now?)

and the first of you turning up the heating?  or changing settings or how the vents are set.

Best keep trying to find the source of the smell,

at the end of a run open the bonnet and try to find the general location.

(Do not touch the coolant reservioir if sitting above Min. & below Max. when cold.

If not then the dealer needs to be checking things.)

It's done nearly 5k now. The only thing different about today was that it was about 10 degrees cooler than anytime I have been running it

If you have the heating set at a certain temperature, then there will be more heat going through the system for the first time maybe,

so just newness.

Please keep as informed as it might be even colder outside tomorrow.

Smell is still there. Only seems to arrive when the car is heated up and when at a standstill or low speeds. Most notible when I've switched the engine off and got out of the car. Can't seem to locate the smell, but might be stronger near drivers side wheel area.

I have had the same smell from my 1.6tdi Monte (now at 2.5k miles). I have just assumed it is the newness of the car but will keep an eye on it...definitely most noticeable around drivers front wheel.

PAS pump?

Keep me posted. I still think its odd that new car smells would appear so long into ownership (5k miles and five months for me).

My cars smell coincided with a big plastic sheet getting stuck on the front of my car. I pull over and removed it and can't see any bits of plastic loges anywhere.

I may have found the problem! Whilst looking under the car I saw some gooey stuff stuck to a pipe (part of the exhaust system?). I picked it off and it smelt like burning plastic! I think I must have driven over something that then got stuck and burnt on. Going to try and pick it all off tomorrow.

have a go at scraping it off ! but you might need to change your pollen filter as it will hold the smell of the burning for a while !
