Rear shock bump rubber

Although my Yeti Tdi 4x4 has just under 40k miles on the clock the near side bump rubber at the top of the rear shock absorber looks completely dead. It is breaking up and feels like a piece of soft foam rubber. I'm guessing I really should replace it fairly soon. So hopefully someone can help with the following questions. Is this an easy part for a DIY replacement ? Should I be worried about the condition of the rear shocks as well ? Are there any major benefits from changing the rear shock absorbers for up-rated, down rated parts if I need to take it to a garage. Thanks

1/  What bit of rubber/foam are you talking about? I can't find any on mine. A photo would be very useful.

 

2/ Are the shockers worn out? Have you tested them? Why do you think they need replacing?

 

3/ Can you explain this "changing the rear shock absorbers for up-rated, down rated parts"? I don't get the last 5 words. Either parts are up-rated or not.

Possible talking about the corrugated rubber sleeve at the top of the shock strut; yellowish colour when new :wonder:

100,000 miles and no issues with suspension bushes or shocks, in fact I only had rear pads and discs changed a week ago, fronts are still original.  At 40,000 I would expect your Yeti to be like brand new and not yet run in.  :happy:

Is your monster still under warranty :wonder:

Thanks, opening post updated to include photo. Looking at the diagram it is the part on top of item 6. Does that mean it's only job is to keep the moving parts clean rather than act as some kind of bump stop.

Poor choice of words with uprated and down rated, maybe stiffer or softer is a better description.

Yes its the top part of a protective sleeve.

Often called a "wiper" and certainly not a "bump stop".

Don't worry about it.

Mine's done over 70k miles and the shockers are all in excellent condition.

The picture posted by TP looks virtually identical to the mkI Octavia. That was straightforward to change as the damper is separate from the spring. To do it properly you will probably need a crows foot spanner for the top of the strut. You can use a jack to compress the spring. Also some of the bolts will need to be replaced with new ones.

Worth doing both sides rather than just one, though the bump stop wasn't cheap considering it was a piece of foam - the plastic tube was swapped over on the Octavia.

Thanks for the replies and advice, I think this Octavia thread better details the part that's failed and the process for replacement looks identical for the Yeti.

James I, I've already had the rear discs and pads replaced, fronts will likely need replacing before long.
