Tyres and Suspension Geometry

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Looking at replacing my tyres on the VRS estate.

All 4 need doing, and I'm pretty set on Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's.

What I do have questions on though, is as follows:

Should I just go for 205/40/17's? Is there any benefit/ability to take slightly wider tyres? I know that the Seat/VW/Audi offerings are a bit wider, and anything to help the FWD fail for power delivery to the road would be most welcome.

The other question is around Geometry setups. I want to get the alignment checked out, but I'm wondering what is adjustable. Previously I had a Honda S2000 which had Front adjustable Camber/Caster/Toe and rear adjustable Camber and Toe. It mean't I could really play about with it, and I'd love to get a bit more feel and weight to the Fabia steering. Is there much that can be done as standard, and if not, are there any mods to enable this?

Looking forward to whatever answers people have on this :)

Maybe try the 215/40 17 tyres, but the tread on the road will not always be wider with 215 over 205,

it might just be the width of the tyres measured side to side.

I have on 215's on that measure the same width as some 205's.

the difference that is there is the slightly taller sidewall, & total Diameter.

So its Tyre Brand Dependent, Pirelli P Zero Nero 205/40 17 being actually bigger than Dunlop Sport Maxx as an example.

You can reduce the Assistance to the Steering with Vagcom.

Not much to do at the rear, and if the alignment at the front is correct then no real point messing with that.

Change the tyres for ones with better traction. then maybe remove the weights off the rear.

Than maybe fit an ARB if you are going to put shorter springs on.

The front is Toe adjustable but castor and camber are fixed.  You can add more front castor by installing the SUperpro Anti Lift control arm bushing which make quite a big improvement.  The rear is camber and toe adjustable.

Geometry changes make a massive difference to how the car handles and turns in but only if the guy doing the geometry work understands what he is doing, if he is just reverting to a stock setup then IMO its not worth the cost of a full geometry setup.

A full bespoke setup on a proper bit of kit such as a Hunter Rig will set you back around £100+.  I'll see if I can dig out my last geometry printout from the Fabia.  We ran 0 degrees toe on the front.  Factory setups toe out a fair amount to make the car more steady and we made the rears toe out alot more to make the rear end more lively on turn in and much more reactive.  Massive improvement.  Although it will limit your tyre life to a certain extent dependent how aggressive you run the settings.

Thanks for the reply Vrsy, you don't need to sell Geometry setups to me. I'd be going to Tony at Wheels in Motion in Chesham, certainly knows what he is doing :)

Did you do this with other mods? It seems like reading up on it that you'd want to do this with RARB and Eibach Springs/Coilovers

He did a few setups on my Octavia.  That guy knows his onions.  Describe how you want it to drive and he sets it up to respond exactly like it!!

I did it with everything, but it will be valid on a stock car as well.
