Sat Nav

Featured Replies

Can I whip out the old radio head unit and fit a skoda nexus RNS unit ? Do I need anything extra ? Car is a 57 , unit is from an 06.

Cheers

GPS antenna.

Otherwise it should go straight in I believe.

Might need some recoding of the car as it has Sat Nav.

Excuse my ignorance but maxidot ? I'm new to the Octavia coming from an RS6. Currently has the standard "stream" head unit and fancied having sat-nav without breaking the bank. Car seems pretty base Vrs so I guess plugging it in sounds ok. I have a spare Fakra gps antenna from the RS6. Can it do handsfree etc ? Is it really that bad or useable ?

MaxiDot is a computer sytle display in the instrument cluster, it's usually white and is almost the full height of the cluster.  It's used to display a lot more information than the usual 1/2 height green display. It's also used to set certain parameters of the car itself.

You can upgrade to Columbus (RNS510) or Amundsen (RNS315) as a preferred upgrade. Columbus with Bluetooth is a fairly rare, and costly find. Amundsen with BT is easy to come across for less than £400. You'd need a microphone (easy install, fairly cheap) for either. Both would use the FAKRA GPS that you've got too.

Guy I'm buying from says no code on paperwork but a 4 digit number on side of unit post removal , is this the code ? If not Skoda say £48 to code it to my car.

It might be, but who'd write the code on the side of the unit?

I wouldn't want to chance it unless the sellar is prepared to put a guarantee on that being the code and refund your expenses for recovering it if it isn't.

Just my opinion.

My dealer charged £25 to get the code for the Stream MP3 I took out when I put the Columbus in. £48 seems a but high (mine was only in 2012).

Looking through and at various units, from what I've seen the code usually starts with 0 or 1 (it's not secret info, there's plenty of youtube videos about how to use certain {expensive} software to get/change the code.) Certain the three units I've had started with either of those two digits.

And as KBPhoto has said, no-one in their right mind would write the security code on the unit itself. Be very careful.

This is a forum about Skoda ownership, there are plenty out there that would question our sanity - usually Citroen and Ford owners ;) ;)

The simple explanation for writing the number on is just sloppy record-keeping. Why bother going through the hassle of paperwork when you can just write the number on the unit?

(I'm not saying it's a sensible move - just one I can understand)

If it's that bad a unit, they might just simply not care as it's unlikely to be nicked if it's not seen as worth much. :)
