LED DRL's

Featured Replies

Hi All

The standard DRL's are pretty pathetic and really need replacing with some juicy LED's !

I've followed the various threads on the topic and done a lot of research on the internet from which it seems that to fit LED bulbs in place of the standard ones we are still left with the Canbus warning problem. To overcome this requires splicing into the wiring to fit resistors - something which I am reluctant to do.

There may however be a solution on the horizon - I have been exchanging emails with Super Skoda on the subject and include below a copy of their latest response.

Hello,

power consuption of the LEDs is not so high to avoid the error code on the display. Since this month we are developing new solution (the middle piece between bulb and car harness plug inside the headlight).
Due to we are making also new rubber cap with holes for the wires, the development is planed to be finished before christmas this year. We have tested the hand-made prototype and it finally works........

The product will be also promoted on our site with reviews of different P13W bulbs from various producers (ebay, alibaba etc etc.), so customer will see, that only our bulbs are suitable for European yeti headlights (the bulb really "click-in" inside the car headlight harness plug. Which is impossible with these chinese bulbs (they are originally copied from different version of P13W - US version for Camaros etc.).

So, mr. Chris, you can look forward on another precise product from our company. If you want to make review with photo-shooting install guide, we can offer you full kit incl. bulbs for free....

I will follow this up and keep everyone posted

Sounds like a good solution - please keep us posted.

You are lucky that Superskoda actually replied to your email, as they mostly ignore the rest of us when we contact them.

Anyway, well done for managing what others haven't.

I was thinking, oh no not another DRL thread!

BUT this does sound like real progress in the cause of having smarter looking DRLs without the messing around with resistors!  I think that I was one of the first to replace the bulbs with the LED/resisitor kit and I can recall the grief in actually locating the bulbs properly in the lamp body.  If Superskoda have solved this, then that is even better.

Keep us posted if/when you get the new design.

Hi Again

Ah -  the secret of getting them to reply is to post in Czech !

My initial email in English didn't receive any response - with the help of an on line translator I then sent a reminder in Czech - Bingo ! - an almost instant reply.

I'll remind them again in about 4 weeks and post when there are developments.

Cheers

Clever thinking "outside of the box" - hats off to you!

This may sound like a particularly stupid question, but having decided against spending £150 extra for LED rear lights on a Yeti ordered only this morning, I'm now wondering if that was a mistake.  Is it really worth £150 just to have brighter rear lights?

Who's charging you £150 for reversing LEDs'????

You're shopping on the wrong internet sites :giggle:

He is referring to the LED rear light cluster that is now an option on the FL Yeti - rear/brake/indicators, not after market reversing bulbs. I have optioned it.

docc - you can add/delete options up to a week before build date (so I am informed by my dealer) - so you know what to do.

Thanks for that - my mistake.  Useful to know about changing options, too - that could be very helpful.  Is this an option really worth £150, though?  Seems an awful lot.

I know it is, but believe me, that when you pull up behind a Yeti with them you will say...."Oh why did I not order them".

Been there so many times myself over the years.

The led rears seem like a bit of bling to me. Are you concerned about what your car looks like? If you are, then go for it. If £150 is making you waver c/o getting your VFM, then I'd make sure I've got useful stuff optioned first like a driver fatigue sensor (£40), heated windscreen washer nozzles (£35), auto-dimming door mirrors (£50) and a double-sided boot mat (£50). These things don't seem to very cost much and if I could have optioned some of them on my pre-FL, then I would have done so.

One wonders who will be the first pre F/L yeti owner to try and install the F/L led rear lights? Wonder to myself if it could be done.

I bet the cost will be prohibitive and considerably more than £150. I suspect it will involve the complete unit and not just the bulbs, and some tinkering with the canbus.

Is it really worth £150 just to have brighter rear lights?

Are they actually brighter?  I thought the brightness of rear lights, brake lights & indicators was covered by C&R regs, and you can't just go throwing more and more candlepower in there (same as headlights, AIUI).

Are the high-level brake lights not LEDs anyway?

I suppose the same argument applies to LED DRLs and headlights, but I understand that LED are much brighter and last for a very long time, so no more blown bulbs to worry about.

LEDs put out more light for a given power use, so if (as a manufacturer) you use LEDs you can consume less power for the same brightness, which means less draw on the alternator, meaning less fuel used to run the lights. It also means you can use thinner gauge wire to the lights, saving money and weight on the wiring loom. It also means you can downrate the alternator and battery, meaning less weight, less power loss and lower cost.

Finally, LEDs light up far quicker than an incandescent bulb, which for a brake light is a recognised safety improvement.

So, as an end user, simply replacing existing regular bulbs with LED versions will, at best, save a couple of watts of power, unless you have to include resistors to keep the CANBUS happy, in which case you save nothing and it is ONLY about looks (and reaction time in the case of a brake light).

Thanks - I'm now convinced that the £150 could be better spent!  I imagine the extra cost to Skoda on a new vehicle ranges from zero to about £10 at the very most.  £150 for the option looks a little like a rip-off!  I'll pass.
