Yet another front end noise thread!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've looked through similar threads, although I can't seem to find any that are on about the specific noise that I can hear.

A month or so ago I started to notice a knocking that appeared to come from the offside front. It happened while going over harsh bumps, and was a fairly high pitch noise (more of a 'tap' than a 'thunk' :)). This noise has got progressively worse over the past few weeks. I can't hear it above 50mph (although it may just be drowned out by road/wind noise) and it doesn't seem to happen with over a few degress of lock on (so actually turning rather than just following a winding road). Riding as a passenger, I think I can feel it with my feet in the passenger footwell, but it still seems the noise comes from the driver's side. It doesn't matter if I'm coasting or on throttle, in gear or out, or braking - the noise is exactly the same.

I've had both wheels off and had a look around and the only things I can see that have any play is the offside drive shaft - when you grab it it appears to have some play in it around the circumference (twisting) and laterally.

Would this seem right?

Cheers!

Top mounts mabye?

Iv got some squeeks and the thunk started tonight! and im pretty sure its the top mounts and it only ever happens then the car goes over a bump or tight turns.

Wish bone bushes, mine was doing the same an it was them. Now it's all back to normal.

Hmm... did the bushes exhibit any play at all?

To be honest , it did it a couple of weeks before the MOT so I left it for them as I'd been working away. I doubt it would take much play for the weight of the car to make it knock.

I had it with the wishbone bushes aswell pal, not noticeable all the time as you say.

Ok then, but what about the movement in the driveshaft?

by play in the driveshaft, do you mean that if you turn the wheel one direction then the other it takes a little bit before is starts to turn in the gearbox mech? or that there is actual movement and looseness?

If the first, mine is like that too, always has been. it struck me as quite a lot the first time I looked at it but I think it's normal now 30k miles on.

As above really, the anti roll bar bushes generally give a clunk on mine (My car seems to like these as much as petrol) so not really high pitched, I would have a good look at your top mounts too as you say it changes when turning which I can't see making as big of a difference with the other bushes.

There seems to be movement in the shaft, but I've not seen another so I'm not sure if it's normal? It's like the innner CV joint has some play?
