MG Rover

Featured Replies

Just heard on the news that SAIC and Martin Leach's bid is due this afternoon; plan to build 100,000 cars a year. Perhaps this is the REAL *Phoenix* Group?

Good news for the West Midlands I hope

reaches for can of worms........... whats the point in building cars that wont sell though? There are thousands of unsold MG Rover's less than 100yds from where I'm sat now.

Absolute farce.I have no idea what goes on with the complicated mess that is mg rover.

There should be one huge car boot sale to sell the unsold stock then whoever is mad enough to take over should start totally afresh.

Concentrate solely on the sleek streetwise.Stunning.Dump the other models.

Make Britain Great again ;)

maybe they will start up the comapny again and remake a new model, then offer the old ones standing around as a buy a new one get an old one free?

But seriously, if they restart up Rover, would the new company then have to honour the old companies warrenties etc?

Went and had a test drive of the MGZS on saturday. It's not a bad car.

Well that was a big review

I would doubt it, I worked for Tiny Computers, then when Time bought parts of the company, they weren't liable for warranty work. I'm guessing it's a similar situation here.

They have already produced almost everything needed to make the 25 replacement. It was featured in AE about a month before the crash.

Looked ok from the few pictures they had.

I agree there is little point in continuing with the current models - they need revisions.

I could be wrong but I was assuming new models... Can't find a link from the BBC News site as yet.

In all seriousness is it not a good time to buy some of their half priced bargains? I mean the MG line up and some of the 75's aren't at all bad.Especially for just a few quid.

Auto express published (I know I know  ) 'suggested 'new designs for the 45 and 75.Hmmmm.Not sure I liked them though.

Don't know why I'm posting really. This is the most confused state I have ever known a company in.I don't know who owns what. What a mess.Suppose its best not to buy into uncertainty :(

Laurence the answer is yes and no.

Been looking about to see if I could run one as a second car (fun or runaround) the prices are low but not really low enough.

I'd wait until the market floods abit more. Dont get me wrong I like the MGR group, I wish it didn't go under but alias it did.

Wouldn't mind a nice zt260!!! :D

I think contrary to what they said at the time I think there are huge issues with getting spare parts. I would want to be sure of that before commiting.

And really, are they are bargain new?? The ones who stand to do best are the used buyers. If they knock out the new ones at a low price, everyone will know how much they paid and so it will affect resale, I'm sure Glasses and CAP will adjust values accordingly. If you already own one you're gonna lose out when you try to sell, it's gonna have to be cheap else people will buy the new ones!!

most parts will not be an issue as at the end of the day most are about 10+ years old.

The only problem parts you "may" have is the new body panels and trim. but say that like Lander Rover (that do not make spare parts for alot of the oldier models anymore) they will be people that will make parts, there will no doubt be a demand for it as there are alot of rover fans out there.

If you do go for a MG/Rover pick the model/trim/engine very carefully.

Top Gear featured the MG best buys a few months ago IIRC, they said don't bother about the MG TF and any base models, go for the top of the range if you can.

MGZT was the best buy wasn't it. Along with 75 models.

If that's the big lardy one then I think so.

Thats the one mate, big cars. Most have pi$$ poor engines that wouldn't pull a Ch@v off your sister.

the v8 is the only answer

:hilarious: :D :D

I read a review of the 75 (i think in Auto Express), and they reckoned the 75 was good, but to get the Longbridge made ones and not the cars made for them by BMW. Apparently, the BMW made cars have black sills?

Why ressurect a car company who has made at best, average cars, and at worst, some of the most terrible cars ever seen on our roads. How can it possibly make financial sense to take on a company that has failed so many times before despite huge amounts of investment by other companies and the loyal taxpayer. MGR was lucky to have come out of the 70's. We were unlucky it did'nt stay there. As for the work force, I feel sympathy for them, but not much. If they hadnt gone on strike every ten minutes, maybe the company would have made some money to reinvest in new products, instead of having to knock 10 year old cars out.

Look back at what they have produced over the years. RIP MGR please.

well for the last 10-15 years they didn't. Also how about how the company was mismanaged over the last 40 years (mainly BL era onwards) it was not just strikes in the '70s that caused them to fail (they were the worlds 3rd biggest car company at the time). It was crap outclassed, poor quality cars combined with non modernisation asnd poor intergration of the BL merger (How many of their many cars were competing against each other with the same cars pitched at the same markets with dealers next door to each other trying to get the same customers).

At least VW aim their marques at different byers (to a degree at least)
