Bump

Noise only happens after a good brisk run OR a long couple of hours drive on the motorway.

Exhaust manifold, there's 2 bolts looking from the top, they can come loose. Least mine did and gave the same symptoms

+1 for the manifold dude

+1 again for the manifold, I have exactly the same issues with mine, it scared the **** out of me because I thought my engine was broken.

Weirdest thing with mine was that it would come and go and I wouldn't hear it for weeks, just one journey or it would be present for a couple of days then disappear. I thought it was the flexi but one of the problems with the exhaust system is the quickness of it warming up so you only have seconds to get your hand back there. Wasn't until one of the bolts had loosened to finger tight that I found the problem lol

This is the slight knocking noise you can hear right?

I hope its a manifold.

Im going to check this week, and thanks for the info guys much help.

Finally got the video to work, another thing it could be is the aircon compressor, the nut can work loose and it fall off. With that tho it goes quiet when you turn the aircon off

Yeah i get the chatter from the air con compressor.

but i hear a really pronounced knock its best from under the car, but it only happens when its had a good time to get hot. Which if it was an internal knock it would do it cold or hot.

And to me it sounds to be coming from either the cam pulley or around the back of the engine.

only happens when hot, an at idle to about 1k RPM

ill get a better video

Right update!

Got a mechanics stethoscope and listened around the engine, its most apparent over the exhaust camshaft, but no noises by the exhaust itself.

I got my timing belt done a month or 2 back, now the garage ****** the timing first time round and got it a tooth out.

HELP!"

Ok Update

Iv taken it to a VW/SKODA/AUDI specialist this morning, he had a good listen around and popped his head out and said "Sounds like the Timing belt idler pully to me lad"

I replied with "It was changed about a month or 2 ago with a Gates powergrip kit incl all tensioners and pully's"

He said "Then it should be all good, but to be honest it aint that noisy to me so i wouldnt worry, 1.8T's are noisy as they are"

if they bend a valve when they did the timming belt change try doing a compression test to see if its bent the valve or not.

Has it ever been run low on oil?

And the noise your hearing from the exhaust cam suggests a worn valve bucket from the hydrolic lfters

  • Author

Im sure they couldnt of got it that wrong tbh, it pulled to well.

never run low on oil in my possession, pipe up changed with new quantum 5w30 and filter, oil is a touch below max and has been since change.

Could be a sticky bucket but to me it doesnt sound like a lifter problem as its not a consistent noise or tone

Good suggestion though Skud

hmm these engine are a little noisy / rattley

I have not heard a really quite one tbh.

To me i would of said either a timing idler or noisy injectors or maybe a lazy lifer. lifters can get noisy after a good run if they are weak or starved of good oil flow.

Cheers all.

I think the end of this month ill refresh the pickup again and oil, could of removed the oil sludge with the new oil blocking the pickup again.

I'd run 5w40 due to age/milage of these engines now and if it still rattles I'd advise further investigating.

5w30 like water

Is your cambelt cover supposed to be missing?

  • Author

It was missing as i was trying to locate the noise better¬!

Cheers for that sound advice!

Any recommendations of 5w40?

EDIT- I think im actually running 5w40, ill take a look at the bottle.--- Correct i am using Quantum 5w40 anways

We'll my flame spitting 8L S3 runs on Fuchs Titan race pro s. It's a proper Ester based fully synthetic oil but depends what mods you done to your engine

I think im going to switch up to Quantum Synta 10w40, she's getting on now so 10w40 should help her along.

Be careful you don't go too far the other way as I am not sure 10w-40 is correct for these cars. A good fully syn 5w-40 should be ok really.
