Would 205/60 R16 Fit?

Featured Replies

Despite ordering a new car being a positive outcome out of the calamitous week I have been having with the Scout. I once again seem in a pickle.

Ordered a new set of Winters for the Scout nice and early (205/60 R16 to better match the 225/50 R17). They've been fitted to the steels, but not fitted to the car. Once it became clear the Scout is on borrowed time last week I asked the supplier if I could swap them, unused, for 205/55 R16s to better fit the Octy 3 when it arrives.

Because they've been fitted the manufacturer won't taken them back for redistribution (or so I'm being told). The supplier doesn't want them in case he can't sell them which leaves me to either eBay/Gumtree them at a loss (in addition to big garage bills, great) or see if they fit the 4x4 when it arrives in the new year but at 3.5% larger I'm loathe to do that, but sick of getting shafted by this bloody car that was a great friend for 5 years and then backstabbed me big time!

Thoughts from the learned Briskoda collective?

3.5%....close call...at 3.5% larger you're at risk of thoeretically falling foul of the C&U regs (speedo can ovr-read by upto 7% I think, but can't under-read).

Do a SatNag check on speedo readings - if it reads 3.5% slow, then you'll theoretically be OK with the winters on (insurance company excluded from this conversation).

The speedo will over read if you fit a wheel with a smaller circumference. (1 turn of the gearbox output shaft results in less distance travelled)?

By my calcs (which could be horribly wrong) I make it 960.38mm (205/50) circumference  against 992.58mm  (205/55) circumference which makes the 205/50 a whopping 3.24% less than standard.

Or putting it a different way........ Standard tyre with 1.6mm tread Vs brand spanking new 205/50 tyre = 1.5% difference.

I wouldn't worry about it.

(Can you tell it's almost home time and I've finished my work for today)

205/60's, Sheldon..
