Castrol edge 0w30 FST VW502 spec or not?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, looking for a spot of tech support. Had my car serviced today at a local independant garage.

I am on 10k fixed servicing and sourced the oil, filter, brake fluid and spark plugs myself. Filter from Skoda rest from ecp.

On opie oils and other sources I see the 0w30 is 502 spec others don't list it under that spec.

What has prompted my worry is the bottle ordered from ecp carries BMW spec on the outer but no 502.

Only noticed this evening.

Car is fabia vrs 1.4tsi.

Do I have a problem?

its fine. and my skoda garage serived my last car with syntium 5000 sx.. BMW's prefered oil for their diesels :P

Fine stuff. (FST- Full Strength Technology)

Look & see please, if the oil temp now shows a couple of degrees lower than normal if you are used to it being around 92*oC when not in a hurry.

I had read a lot to suggest fine before doing this.....the bottle just threw me, and knowing this engine is sensitive to the subject of oil I would consult the briskoda oracle

Higher or lower George?

Have some spark plug shots for you too :o

A couple of degrees displayed lower maybe.

you might notice it takes longer to get to, & then sits at around 88*oC for longer, and then a while to get to 90-92*oC

Some performance oils can have it lower again.

EDIT, Ta.   Were they all OK?

Has three been the worst on other cars on here iirc?

The car on the run home felt very nice, like it had got it's edge back.

Plugs aren't as bad as some I've seen on here but not great either.

The brake pedal feel very strong too with the new fluid

No revelations there i guess but..........yay servicing!

Thanks for the quick answers on the oil.

Pretty much as they should be, or they can be expected to be.

I think you might have been getting your moneys worth out of them recently.

Right time to change them though.

Which plugs did you choose to put in?

yeah, they dont look bad to me.

I went for the BKR7EIX, will be changing regular so in 10k will let you know how they get on.

Going to invest in the coilpack tool and change them myself.

Brake fluid was ATE super racing blue

Oil filter was OEM from Skoda as was driving past.

Car was also treated to a check on a hunter alignment system at a different garage Allcar Tyres Huddersfield really worthwhile for £50.00 and bonus, got a really knowledgeable tech who actually talked to me about what I wanted before just going ahead and doing. Nice guy, nice garage good service.

Hi Sparkly

I recently changed my oil (5000 km) and I used oil ARAL High Tronic SAE 5W-40. This oil is under VW 502 spec

So 2.5k since I put in 3.7 litres of this at service and I have the yellow engine oil light.

Anyone got anythoughts as to whether running a different oil may have contributed to this.

Previously car was hardly using.

Weather's been cold, trying to think if this and the car running low temps on the oil might have had an impact.

maybe 3.5k covered since my Stage I map, always a chance this is contributing.

nothing I can't stomach in terms of oil costs if this is my new usage, but curious nonetheless.

Nice feeling when the car's been serviced eh! Not sure about the yellow light. But a 5-30 should reduce oil consumption instead of a 0w rated oil I would think. But I may be talking out of my bottom as this is the Vrs we are talking about. I'm not a Vrs man, but have driven a couple of them a few times and found them very good and fun. I've tinkered and had the head off one also and it seemed well put together.

Without wishing to sound patronising to anyone, I think George and some others are really the most informed individuals anywhere concerning the Vrs. It's one of the things that makes this site the best in the world for Skoda Cars. Colin D should again be congratulated for what he and the many admins and mods do for us all.

MERRY XMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.

Lets just assume more cold weather driving and short journeys has used the extra oil.

& then the odd more spirited after the re-map and plug changes.

I lent my Twincharger out for a few weeks after doing an Oil & Filter change,

it was doing short journeys only and when i got it back the oil was 'Well low', after only a few hundred miles, only time ever,

& never happened again in the thousands of miles since.

I would just top up with the Castrol as is in now,

and at the next Oil & Filter change maybe go for a try of Mobile 1, or another even more performance orientated Oil.

5w 30 or 5w 40,  i would not change from that really.

'OzFabia' is on 0w 30 i think, but then rather different ambient temps.

How many miles were on those sparkies sparkly ?

Thanks George,

Spot on advice methinks, I think 0w30 is perhaps more of a "summer" oil :giggle:  perhaps not even the best for UK weather at all.  Has kept temps much lower than what was in previous.

I'm also sure I've been taking advantage of the map more when not in motorway hypermileing mode.

I have a 25% discount code for ECP so will order up 4 litres and top it today, keep doing so until next change as you say.

Certainly not worrying about it, just a bit of an unexpected turn up for the books.  The fact it has come shortly after switching oils probably tells me all I need to know but thought it was best to share the info.

Binzie,

The thing about spark plugs is, you have no idea when buying a used car, if on original plugs or not.

(You know if there are not the cheapo VW plugs in that the car comes with.)

The previous owner might have had them changed at 20,000 miles,

half the Skoda Service schedule of 40,000 miles.

I think the 40,000 miles needs revised or reviewed,

i changed plugs again on a Twincharger last week.  22,000 miles, and the second plug from the drivers side was again,

oiled and had been getting over heated before the oiling.

That is a hot Cylinder/Piston on the Twincharger due to the Forced Induction design and needs to be checked on.

Plugs changed early worth every penny IMO.

These are the VW original plugs i changed before this latest ones,

when there was No Engine Emissions light showing or any Fault code.

Plug Sh4gged tho.

Sorry, bad picture.
