Brake discs, recommend me

Featured Replies

Hi guys, so Im looking at renewing all my brakes, starting with the rear, I have picked up a set of ebc redstuff for really cheap and looking at discs now as they are scored and lipped. Any recommendations? ECP Pagid discs? What size am I looking for, I have a 57 plate VRS Tdi Hatch.

Also would OEM or Pagid front discs with Redstuff pads be a decent combo.

Any discount codes for recommended retailers?

Mtec drilled/grooved disks get a good write up. I would assume they will do a set for the octy.

Pagid + redstuff is fine, no problems, pagid discs are very similar to oem discs as they have a special matt silver coating on them to prevent to contact areas rusting.

Pagid discs + Pagid pads are more than adequate and your car will stop without issue.

I was leaning more towards EBC pads to reduce brake dust, my OEM pads are awful so I would assume Pagid pads would be just as bad.

Anyone know what size discs for the rear I would need as there are two sizes on a couple online stores

Are your rear discs vented?  I think the larger size are vented and the smaller ones are solid. iirc

+1 got them with discount code too from ECP

Very slightly better than the OEM I'd say.

I have EBC turbo groove discs and yellow stuff pads. They are really good. Reign in 260 bhp happily.

EBC high carbon blades here in conjunction with Pagid OE spec pads (in Boxster 4 pots)

I've got MTEC discs all round been on for about a year now and can report no issues inhad them coated in black to avoid the rusty hub. It's still black today. Very pleased and they sometimes do discounts too. I will dig through my inbox see if I can find one.

Anyone know the discount code for ecp.

And on a more important note, I still can't find the right size of disc for the rear of my 2007 vrs tdi. I had a look at the disc and saw a couple of vw and Audi symbols near the face but no sizes, oh and they are a solid disc.

Any ideas guys?

Brisk25,  UKMKIV25, both work but only when there is no other offer on from ECP

Your rear discs... You will have to measure the diameter of what you have fitted now. there are four sizes, see HERE

255mm

260mm

272mm

282mm

Wheel off and measure yours will be the only way of knowing for certain, you will also needs pads to match.

Ah crap I'm now trying to think of a way to measure without taking the wheel, it's Baltic outside. Thanks guys for the help.

I do however find it odd there are 4 sizes and no one knows what size fits the vrs, online shops included. I'm not even sure I should update this thread when I find out what size they are incase there are actually differences between a 2006 model and 2007 model?

*Should* be 282mm but don't take my word for it.

Are the vrs not 312 front and 288 on the rear? That's for a MY08

Ive emailed EBC direct to see what they say, there sizes are different to what Im expecting I need, they think(online) my front discs are 288mm in dia...?

OK guys, im getting to my wits end on this.

I received an email from EBC and they are asking for a picture of my PR option codes, ive now sent that off to them to see what they come up with. The pr code on my car for rear disc brakes is 1KP (found on the front page of the service manul), which according to ECP, car parts 4 less etc. relates to a 282mm diameter solid disc.  Best part is I measured them and come up with 286mm diameter, however I didnt take them off the car for a 100 percent accurate measurment i did use 2 pencils held at 90 degree angles to the disc face to extend the measuring face away from the hub. I can tell the difference between 282 and 286 quite clearly and its def 286mm.

I also emailed skodaparts.com with my reg and they gave  me links to part number 1K0615601AD which is a 282mm solid disc

AHHHH!

Do I go with my accurate as possible measurement or what the PR code tells me.

If you're absolutely happy that your less than 100% accurate measurement is correct by 4mm difference over what the parts websites list, then go for it otherwise to be certain I'd probably go to the effort of taking the disc off the car and measuring it.

My ECP contact says Textar are preferable to Pagid these days.  I had them on my old BMW and they were excellent, stopping the car just fine and also keeping their looks through the winter.

If you DIY, clean the hub mating surface thoroughly with a drill and a rotary wire brush.  Garages often don't bother*, then you get runout, disc thickness variation and pedal vibration a few months later when you can't prove it was them who messed it up, and you need new discs again to cure the problem.  But you probably know all this.

*equally abhorrent is the practice of using an air tool to fasten wheel bolts, working round the wheel in a circle and using the final recommended torque straight away.  This can warp a disc; we've had them go bad shortly after a tyre change.

One of my pet hates that, using air tools to greatly over torque critical bolts, they have a specific torque for a reason.

The disc sizes for my vrs 59 FL 312 mm front 288 mm rear (solid)

I have used EBC Redstuff pads, they have been ok. I find they bite a little better than the OE pads, but I haven't really seen a reduction in the amount of brake dust which is a little disappointing.

Does anyone have any tips for removing the old disc that are well and truly rusted onto the hubs?

When replacing discs, if I've had a particularly sticky disc, I've used a rubber hammer to get it off.
