Possible Car Details Compromised?

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

I recently received a postcard type flyer (ie open for all to see) from a Skoda dealer which contained my name, address, my car details and also the VRN.  I have emailed DVLA to enquire what someone could obtain with all that information, (I was thinking primarily of 'cloning' and insurance fraud), but they did not seem to understand what I was getting at, as they merely stated no one had recently made any enquiries about my vehicle.

Have I a right to be concerned?

I don't think they should have provided the information openly, my concerns would not be overly heightened though. Would prob need a postal worker reading everything to notice that and have a use for the information. I would be asking Skoda what their game is though since your not happy.

Dealers can buy mailing lists from the DVLA for marketing purposes.

Happy that the dealer knows my details, it's the one I use for servicing and MoT Just not happy that they have put all that info in one easy to read postcard!

I'm reasonably careful with my personal info, shred or burn important docs, write over my name and address on envelopes etc. That still didn't stop someone from Dubai taking £1750 from my account at Xmas, 2010!

I'm due a service in a few weeks, I'll just inform them not to send me out the postcard style correspondence.

All the details will be on the skoda system so no need to contact the dvla.

Have you raised your concerns with Skoda/the dealership?

Details on a postcard are nothing the postman doesnt see on youre drive everyday.

Dont be so wet behind the ears.

This.

Thanks for all the replies guys, especially Rover220, you cheeky little scamp.  I had to chuckle at the 'wet behind the ears' comment, I hadn't been called that since I joined up in '91!

After getting £1750 taken out of my bank account by person(s) unknown based in Dubai, you kind of get a little concerned when your personal information is bandied around.

Not my postman as mine is either at work (at the time they deliver these days) or in the garage out of sight.

I would raise your concerns with the Sales Manager (or Director) at your dealership as Marketing will probably come under his remit.

Your card was likely cloned, typically they wait months before they pounce.

Usually there is a very small 'test' Transaction somewhere in the UK first. Some organised criminals will use the same area the card was cloned in.
