I never have trusted dealers.

Featured Replies

No big deal I know but all the same how can you trust dealers to do the simple tasks.

I don't use my car much, only very short journeys now but noticed how bouncy it had become yesterday.

First thought tyre pressures? Checked and well 36psi front and 38psi rear what the.......

Keep reminding myself, do it yourself you know it makes sense. And I let em loose on doing an oil change as well recently.

What service have you had done and when was the last time you checked them?

First service done, so just an oil change and check over. Tyres usually checked by me every two weeks but this time I lapsed it a little so since the service it's been nearer 4 weeks.

Year or 10k?

If you checked them during a cold spell, and have checked where the temps risen this would explain it.

Are the fronts and rears over by the same amount?

A daft question possibly as I'm on my phone on 3g and can't get on Skodas website but is the checking of tyre pressures included in the 1st service?

At 10k no.

The tyres were checked cold, should be 33 psi front and 30psi rear. So at 36 front and 38 rear, I reckon they have checked and inflated the tyres incorrectly. I've not touched them since, unless a little fairy has been on my drive and blown some air into them recently.

I have a manual and digital air gauge both nigh on equal readings on both when I check the tyres.

Oh and it was a 12 month first service, not reached 10k yet.

Yes very bouncy, but it's taken me near on 4 weeks to notice this. I have been driving my other car a good deal though so you get used to one then jump back to the other.

You should really be checking them warm.

After a run, simply add 3psi to the cold values.

I don't think even checking a tyre cold then when warm would explain why it's 8psi above what it should be.

I reckon on what's happened here is, they've read the tyre pressure plate on the fuel flap incorrectly, swapped front for rear pressures ( fully loaded pressures) and their gauge is also out :wonder: Most likely got the valeter to do it when it was cleaned.

Just wait for the customer feedback letter you should get and note it on there.

Most people never check tyre pressures. I reckon that's the reason why they put a bit too much at service. A bit too much is better than too low in this case.

Yes, that's probably it.  It's perfectly safe and acceptable for an authorised VAG dealer to deliberately over-inflate by 8 psi.  No problem there.

In much the same way they stick an extra 3 litres of engine oil in if they find that your oil level was a bit low when they checked.  That would ensure that you always had enough oil in the engine.

For sure 8psi is not a safety issue with these modern radial tyres. You only lose some mileage. IF they put correct pressure at the service, it's not correct 3 weeks later. That's safety issue. Rubber let some oxygen thru all the time. That's why pressure drops.

Should I tell you that too much oil is not same at all? Some of us newer check oil level, but that's their problem. Not safety issue really, but might come expensive at some point for the owner.

Edit: Just to remind you, never overfill engine oil. It could blow your engine.

Yes I agree about over inflating tyres beyond the manufacturers recommended figures.  Actually, when I buy a new car I inflate the tyres to 70psi and find that I don't have to check them for years.  I disagree about the engine oil though....you can never have too much of a good thing....I top up until it overflows then just wipe up the excess.  Usually sees me through the year until the next service.

I reckon you should leave all that for professionals. Let them do things properly.

Oh right, OK then.

Has someone rattled your cage today Oldstan? :giggle:

I always check the oil level and tyre pressures after a service( Hortons absolutely spot on.)

I lose count of the number of cars driving around with tyres obviously very low in pressure ,and often leave notes under peoples windscreen wipers to point it out.

The drivers have always been grateful.

Who ME !!!   ????  :giggle:

It's all a load of hot air, someone releasing a bit of pressure, as I gauge it, and I'm getting tyred of it.

I'm now going to wheel out of here, before it inflates anymore.

Tread carefully then.  :-)

When swmbo had her Citigo's first service I asked the service chap to check tyre pressures, as they had not been done for a couple of weeks.

I was assured "do not worry Sir, that is all part of the service checks the tech will do"

So as far as my dealer is concerned yes checking tyre pressures is part of the service.

Could be that the garages tpg was out of calibration if all 4 x tyre pressures where the same amount over?

Next question is;

How accurate is your tpg? Have you checked yours against a known value?
