Turbo failure

I have a 61 plate Roomster Scout (so 25 months old) with 20150 miles on the clock.  Last night the car let out plumes of smoke all over the moterway after it suffered a big drop in power. The revs also went thru the roof as if the accelerator was jammed full on.  I found out this morning that the turbo had let go.  After much humming and hawing Skoda have agreed to replace said turbo.  Anyone else out there had any problems about the same thing.

Disappointing to read about your problem. It is to be hoped that Skoda will promptly resolve the matter. I have the 07 plate and have (so far, 60,000 miles) not come across any similar query. Best wishes

Sorry for the delay in replying but have only just heard from the dealers.  in answer to a question it is a Roomster Scout TDi 105bhp.  The dealer claim that I have overfilled the engine with oil thus resulting in the above conditions and are reluctent to replace anything under warranty.  I know it wasn't me who filled the engine with oil so I can only assume it is a fault with fuel pump or injectors putting excess diesel into engine.  If I find anything else out from the dealers I will post again.

Makes me angry when I read of yet another Dealer trying to pass the buck!

If you have had the car serviced by them from new, and you haven’t put any extra engine oil in between services, then its down to them, no one else.

The only thing I’m aware of with regard to overfilling of the sump with to much engine oil is damage to the catalytic converter. But I cant see how overfilling the sump would cause the turbo to fail.

If diesel has found its way into the engine sump and diluted the engine oil ,thus affecting the lubrication of the turbo and bringing about its early demise isn’t it still a warranty issue?

Wouldn’t be a change to hear some nice stories of dealers ,who on hearing of a major fault under warranty ,saying don’t worry we will put it right no questions asked, and not changing their minds later on!

In reply the dealers now say that there is no fault to be found.  In my heart I know there is something wrong so (sadly) the car will be traded in for something else.  Lets see if the dealers try and sell it on without doing something about it.

So much for Skoda Customer Service Promise!I have never owned a car from new and when you read things like this it puts you off. These dealers seem to treat their customers with utter contempt!

Makes you wonder if Skodas warranty is not worth the paper its written on ,what's the Vauxall 10 year lifetime warranty worth.I dare say they have all got small print some where getting them out of their obligations.

Anyway I hope it all works out for you in the long run.Good Luck!

Why do you feel that the dealer is wriggling out of there obligation?  If they do the preliminary checks and the first thing they find on draining the oil is that there is too much and it does not smell of fuel then they have a point.

I would ask the dealer to show you the excess oil and also to explain why it has damaged the turbo, turbo has a pumped oil feed and is high up, as long as oil can flow and return why would it damage it?

Contact SUK, explain you think you are being blagged and that you know you have not topped up any oil and take it from there, also it is a good thing to speak to an independent specialist and ask how excess oil can damage a turbo?  If they give you a different answer then quote this back to your dealer, I have found that once a dealer thinks you have a little knowledge about what you are talking about they are less likely to treat you with contempt.

I am sure your turbo will be replaced under warranty, after all it is SUK who authorise this and not the dealer, they just get paid to fit it.

Good luck, hope you get the result you want.

From experience dont just accept the word of the telephone peeps at SUK..They are very nice but useless. Their training is pitiful and they are reading the answers  off the computers screen..Personal experience for which SUK sent me a £50 goodwill voucher. Demand to speak to a manager and refuse to accept anything less. Then onwards you will start to get some sense, but that is the level you have to go to...Please keep up the pressure and I`m sure you will get a better result. Please feel free to PM me if you want any further info

I know this is a different engine but his turbo was replaced under warranty.

I would play merry hell with them! But that said I know how hard it can be dealing with service receptionists who are all smiles, and sweet talk, its hard to get angry with them.Give me a good independent dealer who knows what they are talking about, and the guy on reception who has actually worked on cars.Much easier to deal with.

The dealer knows better than anyone that when the turbo fails, it pulls engine oil in which acts like fuel and the engine runs away at high revs. Google Turbo failure and you will find this out easily enough.

Go back to the dealer, tell him they are trying to pull a fast one, you will get an independent engineer to look at the vehicle before you sue them in Court.. Also inform them that you will report them to Trading Standards. It should concentrate their minds. :giggle:

Name and shame them on here. Skoda should expect a certain level of customer care which this dealer seems to ignore.

BTW Skoda, I will be looking for a new car in January. A response (or not) to this owner might just swing another Roomster for me.
