main dealer woes

Featured Replies

Hi all

My daughter has just bought an 02 plate  1.4 fabia 16 v a week ago  from a skoda main dealer in worthing

It has done 40 k with a full main dealer service history .she paid £2400 but it is in good nic

I asked the salesman if the cam belt had been done and he said he would check and if it needed it would be done as there was no mention of it in the the service record, and it would also have a years mot

On picking car up we were told that it did not need one , my understanding is four years or 60 k .

Also on the mot there were advisorys that some front suspension bushes are worn .

So do you think she is in her rights to demand that at least the cambelt is changed .

thanks

At 10 years old I would expect the cam belt to be replaced as a kit along with the water pump and coolant after you had enquired about it at the time of purchase.  The 16 valve engine has plastic pulleys and these can break up over time, taking the belt with it.

I assume that it's got 12 months MOT as promised, the bushes are advised, but still meet the minimum standard. They may remain serviceable for quite some time.  On a car of this age a price you can't expect it to be as new.

was this car sold as an approved used car ?

If so it must pass the 100 point check and suspension wear will be in this.

It will be the console bushes worn and silly skoda now advise changed the whole alloy assembly rather than the bushes so dealers wont do it on a sales car .

It should be on its 2nd cambelt by now.

Ive had this argument with my local vw dealer over my dads bora tdi, 11 years old but 33k and saying it didnt need a belt, when i asked for confirmation in writing that if it failed they pay as it went against vw recommondations suddenly they wanted to do it lol.

On the 1.4 16v if its the same as the golf 4 engine its has 2 belts and its the small one between the 2 cams that fail.

A £2400 Fabia at a main dealer? Round here anything over 5 years old they wouldn't put near the forecourt

The bushes might still pass the 100 point check because there is a traffic light system + they may fall in the amber "advise" section.

They shud change the cambelt if it was sold on the forecourt as an "Approved Used Skoda". But at that price u might find it wasnt.

I only discovered recently but some dealers sell cheaper cars that wouldnt normally be sold at a dealer. But they sell them as "MOT standard". A mate of mine bought a mk5 VW Golf sdi with 100k+ from a Vauxhall main dealer for £3500. I put it on the ramp + found both outer CV boots split + the fuel cooler loose! The cambelt was due and the A/C didnt work aswell as the remote fob! Also one of the arches was rusted + there were dents all over it! He is in the proccess of trying to get bits dun by the dealer but they have fobbed off everything so far! They even argued the CV boots "just needed cleaning off". I was shocked they sold cars like that but it was cheap. If it was "Approved Used" they wouldnt have sold a car that old in the 1st place.

Also Console bushes on a Fabia/ Polo/ Ibiza are NOT replaced with the housing Spud u r getting confused with mk5 Golfs/ Octavias/ Passats etc.
