Bugger! Sidelight fell into headlight

Featured Replies

Title says it all!

Was fitting LED sidelight bulbs and when trying to secure the bulb and holder in the headlight, the LED bulb fell through into the headlight.

Any idea's how it can be extracted?

Exactly same thing happened to me :(

I'm not going to lie it was a bugger to get out! I used a wire coat hanger with some blue tack on the end and secured with insulation tape so I didn't lose the blue tack too! Then spent 15min fishing about and finally managed to get it out.

Which hole did you use? Sidelight? Or use indicator light hole?

Also, did you have to remove the headlight?

Thanks for your help

I used the sidelight hole, didn't have to remove the headlight as I was able to bend the hanger

Luckily it was the near side so easier access. Does the indicator area give access to that area? If so the opening is bigger but I think the angle would be tricky

Thanks Jonro....  I've had a look and the indicator is on a "reflector shelf" which stops the sidelight from being shaken out the indicator hole.

Will see what I can do....  I was surprised how loose the sidelight was on the headlight, it just "sits there"

Get your self a 'syringe action'grabber tool.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00439FN06/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1383402209&sr=8-2π=AC_SX110_SY165

Steering on full lock.

Unscrew the wheel arch liner and this gives much better access to the rear of the headlight.

Then its a case of perserverence. I found it best to pre-bend the grabber to give better reach once inside the headlight lens.

Best of luck and try not to lose your temper with it.

Jonny,

Is it not easier to remove the headlight?  Its passenger side thats the issue.   aka the horrible side

Is very loose I'm surprised they don't just come away while driving!

Do you plan to take the headlight off?

Jonny, read your thread and yup you've been there!   I'll order one of those tools (thanks for the link) and also try the coat hanger (dont have any in the house) so hopefully 1 of those idea's will work.

Failing that, some pleading to a local garage or cut a hole in the clear lens

I'll be sure to secure the LED to the holder next time!

Thanks all for your help. Grabber been ordered and fingers crossed!

If you can connect a smaller hose to your vacuum cleaner you will be able to retrieve it quite easily

UPDATE

Well I got the grabber and managed to get hold of the bulb inside the headlight but cant get the bugger out. Its almost like a 1 way hole - goes in ok but not the other way. The LED + grabber arms are too wide for the hole. I managed to get the back of the bulb right upto the hole and then used needle nose pliers but still no joy and ended up pulling off the base of the bulb. :@

Will keep trying but I'd advise people NOT to try a CREE sidelight as its a dangerous move.  Now ordered these and they should be much better because they're the same size, if slightly shorter, than the original bulb.

Just be careful with those bulbs you've ordered as I've got the same ones.

They were quite loose fitting in the holder and it nearly fell into the headlight like what's happened to you already!

Got my side light bulbs today, just waiting on the car now!

Any tips on doing this, so I don't drop them into the light? Or do I just need to be careful?

Gazbull - how did you do it? Just be very careful or use a drop of insulation tape?

Superdon - Yeah I think be very careful and hopefully you've got the correct diameter. Hopefully Gazbull will fill us in ;-)

stuartt, I bottled it mate.

I had them both fitted and they looked fine but I didn't trust them and was frightened that they dropped out the holders so I took them back out.

I was thinking of fitting them again and maybe putting a touch of epoxy glue on the end of the bulbs before putting them in the holders.

It may be that the ones you get are a bit thicker so you might not have the same problem.

I don't blame you bottling it!   Although I've ordered them, its no great loss or cost if I don't fit them.

Ok so if not tight then remove.... innuendo or what lol

Mind you though, some good news.... got mud flaps and winter tyres fitted today.   Had the car 3 weeks and now onto steels until April lol

Any chance of a pic with the mud flaps on?

What mud flaps did you get as the standard Skoda ones don't fit the Monte Carlo?

  • Author

I got these....  http://www.performancecreations.co.uk/skoda-fabia-mk2-monte-carlo-2013-on-mudflaps-1297-p.asp

but I decided NOT to apply the monte carlo stickers.

I got the 4mm thick ones due to Shetland roads. They're quite low to the ground so beware going over speed bumps as they might catch. However they are quite flexible and if you needed, you could easily chop an inch or 2 off the bottom.

They come in different colours but obviously black is probably the preferred option.

Installation is easy and takes about 15 mins per wheel. No need to drill any holes as it uses existing screws.

Superdon, goto the website and you'll see some pics or search on the forum, but if you'd like me to take extra or specific pics then let me know.
