Winter wheels on...eventually

Featured Replies

I collected my winter wheels from storage this morning and got the first 4C 'bong' of the season on the way. Cleaned & de-tarred (rinsed before storing) followed by a couple of coats of Collinite 476S, ready to put on this afternoon.

I'd got every thing ready to see how quick it was the do the actual wheel change. First wheel off and winter wheel put on, tightened up the bolts by hand then started on the torque wrench - no click. Slackened it off then set back to 120nm - no click. Spent ages faffing with it, then partially dismantled it, and then lost a tiny 4mm long locating pin (twice), in an attempt to get the rocking cam that produces the click back into the correct place.

Finally got it working again and I think I see what had gone wrong. I have religiously slackened off the tension after each use, but I think I must have left the locking nut at the base too loose whilst in the back of the car - six months of local potholes - allowing the cam to slip out of position. Tightening it up this morning had just locked the cam in the wrong position, so it would wrench but not torque :(

I'm glad I don't charge myself dealer rates on the job or I'd be bankrupt by now :giggle:

I'll check the torque with another wrench to be on the safe side, to make sure the calibration hasn't gone off (I didn't touch the allen key hole that controls this).

Torque wrench is currently on offer in aldi if they have any left.
