Bolero firmware update (yet again)

Featured Replies

The Bolero in my 2010 Yeti is dreadfully slow to load and start playing music from an SD card.  Numerous threads on here indicate that this is due to it having the original firmware version, and that getting it updated to firmware version 54 cures the problem.

I discussed this with my dealer, including pointing them at some of the relevant threads on here, and they agreed to attempt the firmware update for me while they were doing some other work.  When I went back to collect the car they told me that my Bolero already had the latest firmware.  To prove this they gave me this print-out from their system:

They did admit that it doesn't actually show the firmware version that is on the Bolero, but they were adamant that there was no update available, and poo-pooed all evidence to the contrary from other Bolero owners on Briskoda.

Can anyone shed any light on how they can get their system to update the Bolero firmware, so that I can go back to the dealer and get them to try again using those instructions?

I think you have to say that specific things aren't happening and that there is a fix for that problem.

I can't believe that dealers aren't yet up to speed with this issue.

I believe you're right, but I've not managed to work out exactly what it is that you're supposed to say is wrong.  I've read references to "problem with Curve" but I've no idea what that would be in terms of symptoms I might be able to cite to a dealer.

I was hoping that gav611 might spot this thread and provide more information about what my dealer needs to do.  I think he helped your dealer out when you go the job done on your Bolero?  Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have been on Briskoda since July.  I suppose I could try PMing him...

Yep, as the above screenshot says, we're back to the issue that no identifiable fault can be found with your unit. Such as an error code or the like; that search will look for that type of issue.

If you trawl the other threads on this, the magic phrase is contained in there somewhere :) I can't for the life of me remember what the update 'officially' cures; I know it's not anything related to the SD card scanning speed, which we all know is the real issue!

Cheers,
Steve

To confirm what software is on your Bolero, press and hold the Setup button for a few seconds, new screen should appear with FM, AM and Version Info. Press Version Info and will show the model number of Bolero and software number.

If your Bolero is 1Z0 035 156 F (it is a Blaupunkt) then you can go for software 054 by asking your dealer to do the 'volume curve' upgrade. Not exactly sure what it is but could be something to do with the auto volume linked to car speed. Takes best part of an hour connected to the Skoda dealer computer. A friendly dealer should be able to sort it.

If your Bolero shows as 1Z0 035 156 M (it is a Delphi) then I believe they have different software versions and I think 008 is the latest and does not have problem with SD card reading speed.

Hope that helps.

I've read that advice about checking the version number by pressing and holding the setup button before but, as other owners of Boleros with early firmware have reported, it doesn't work for me.  All I get is the AM & FM options, no Version Info.

As John999boy says, it's utterly ridiculous that this problem, which has existed for at least free years, maybe more, is still giving dealers problems.  I've read one post on here from someone who took their car to a dealer which had already successfully upgraded another Briskoda contributor's Bolero, and the dealer denied any knowledge of the process.

Why is it so flipping' difficult for Skoda and their dealers to get this right?

Same for me, I double-checked last night just to be sure. I have the 1Z0 035 156 F unit.

I've not even attempted to discuss this with a dealer though, chiefly because mine is retrofitted. Secondly because I don't want to be paying an hour's labour for a 10 minute job, on a point of principle really. Especially as I could quite easily do it myself; just a shame nobody has come up with the required update files yet :)

The car was connected to Skoda computer for best part of an hour. Apparently it is a very slow connection.

I wouldn't pay for the upgrade software but asked for it to be done free-of-charge when having a service done.

Shouldn't cost the dealer anything as once the car is connected they just leave it to do the update, no real labour involved.

If I remember correctly the 'Version Info' became available via VCDS customization rather than the Bolero software upgrade.

I could be wrong so may be worth checking that out in the VCDS section.

Slow connection speed is their issue, not ours. The update will not be that large, in data terms.

What I object to is an hour's labour being charged, when the actual 'labour' involved is minimal - connection, download, verify, install, disconnect. I doubt much more than 10 minutes actual 'work'.

I do firmware upgrades quite often; just not to electronics surrounded by a vehicle :)

Can you try ringing other local dealers? The one who supplied my car, like yours, was very negative about it. But I found the closest to me was absolutely fine, recognised it quickly on the phone, and charged £39. Maybe it helped that I told him the part number for the radio as I'd lifted up the glovebox to take a pic, and taht going from 53 to 54 would work on it.

Yes, I think I'll have to try the one other dealer within 50 miles that isn't Arnold Clark (shudder).

Anyone know how to get at the info label on the Bolero in a Yeti?  Per my reply to styler67, pressing and holding the info button doesn't give me any version info, but I can try to track down a local VCDS owner and see if they can get anywhere.

I would imagine that you will have more success trying West End than Arnold Clark (I agree with the shudder).

West End have always been very helpful when I have been in. I also need this fix on my Bolero (1 min to load is too much) and I would be happy paying for the cure if its under £50. Guess the previous owners (who I am told were of "senior years") didnt use the SD card for music.

It's West End (the ex-Chathams Sighthill branch) who have so far failed to apply the upgrade to my Bolero.  I'd be interested to know if you get any further with them than I have managed to.

How do you apply the new firmware yourself - do you need any specific equipment (eg VCDS)?

My balero doesnt seem to be that slow. My SD card reads virtually straight away, will try and find out the firmware I have using the setup button later. I will then report back.

Edit; Car is a 2009 Octavia, so should be an older firmware than ejstubbs

Haha, if it could be done via anything other than the dealer equipment, I'd have done it myself by now

Well actually it's more access to the physical update data files, that would be very handy. No dice so far though :)

Did any of firmware updates ever fix other issues with Bolero - like pausing right after start of the song/inability to process gapless tracks (especially VBR suffers from this, it's like it starts to play then pauses to re-read the file) and always looping playback within the same album from MDI iphone connection without ever moving on to the next album?

  • 1 month later...

Anyone get any further with this issue? My dealer told me there is no upgrade available but my precious yeti never suffered with this super slow problem of moving from folder to folder on the sd card.

Any help would be great!

I just had a new one put in mine under warranty. It has the automatic volume increase with speed now. Used to have GALA, which is no longer there. So, I guess I have the new one!

  • 2 weeks later...

mine has new firmware (see post further up) but still has gaps between tracks. But at least it's quick between folders. But.. i wish the mfsw buttons let you navigate the folder tree, so there was no need to touch or look at the screen & take eyes off road.
