TDI Engine Tuning

Featured Replies

In the near future I'm going to be hopefully doing some engine tuning to my Octavia.

Mine is a 1998 Octavia 90bhp TDI

What I'm thinking of doing so far is,,

De-cat

Mufflerectomy

Induction Kit

EGR blanking

Remap

Am I on the right lines for the engine tuning and is there anything else you would suggest doing?

Anyone have any input on this?

Hi,

I didn't think the old alh 90bhp engine had a cat or egr valve but I stand corrected.

I would just stick with just a stage 1 remap as you need to look after the fuel pump.

Google kerma tdi for more info.

The turbo is not a vg/ vnt unit so won't have such a wide spread of torque/ power.

I haven't look for the CAT yet so unsure on that but I've had a look for the EGR valve and I think I have found it at the back of the engine, but I might be wrong

It does have an egr valve - take a look at THIS video

Cheers mate

Egr is round silver thing on back left corner of the engine, just peaking out from under the cover. You probably have a waste gate turbo, but there is a slim chance it is vnt.

It is what I was looking at then, does fitting EGR blanking plates cause any problems?

I don't think so, but it could throw up a warning light.

Cool might give it ago.

Also seen that some people say that if the vacumn pipe that goes to the EGR valve get blocked with something it does the same thing. ANyone has any expreance of doing this?

The egr is also the anti shudder valve which operates when you stop the engine, you may find it runs on a bit or shudders.

I think people have a golf tee to block the vacuum pipe.

Hmmm will give it ago, if it runs on or shudders I'll re connect it and just it a really good clean.

If you take off the pipe that goes into the egr from the intercooler (i.e. left hand side of the egr) you will probably find it is full of tarry gunge.  This is caused by oily air from the crank case vent, which goes into the inlet pre turbo, meeting sooty exhaust gas.

If you have the time it would be worth removing and cleaning the egr and inlet manifold.

On my mkI Octy I found that by doing the elephant mod (vent the CCV to atmosphere via a catch can) it stopped the gunge accumulating.  The EGR does help the engine to warm up a bit quicker and does help with emissions, so I prefer to leave it alone.

The anti shudder valve is a separate vac line,

Just pull the vac hose off the top of the valve and block it with a golf tee/ small bolt.

It won't put warning on the dash at all (2003 and newer it started to monitor it).

Your car would need the ecu chipped, it's too old for a plug in remap.

There are plenty of people who do chipping and it normally costs upto £50 on a standard remap price.

I wouldn't bother with the induction kit but I would consider bigger injector nozzles and a bigger FMIC.

Cheers for all the replays and info,

Just had a look at the engine code and mine is a AGR

Right...

De-Cat - MOT Fail! (unless you bash the cat out and leave the bulge)

EGR Delete - MOT Fail? (just map it out)

110 nozzles (.205 is it) in my experience a must

remap - get a cable, speak to blacksmoke (waiting for the arguements) again a must (just map out the EGR!)

Then adjust the IQ and so on. Make sure the timing is good and you are good to go.

A Decat on an old diesel will generally cause very little inconvenience come MOT time. Most testers just base their opinion on the smoke opacity test, if it passes that then there is no real reason to fail it on the missing cat, unless you're a bit of a mr nasty! Your suggestion of knocking the element out of it is probably the best way to do it! Still looks legit and removes the restriction.

An egr on this age of car will remain unnoticed by the ecu if it's unplugged and should have no effect on the MOT.

The ecu may require a chip change as it's an older type but black smoke should be able to help with that.

My ALH as ok with the EGR unplugged yes! My ASV throws a ECL and my ASZ is also OK.

I wouldnt want to run the risk of no cat at MOT. Strangley my exhaust failed today at the cat... im geting it welded but do i break the cat out...... ooh decisions decisions....

Why it fail if I remove the CAT,? I didn't think diesel's needed a CAT for the MOT?

Why will blanking/removing the EGR fail the MOT?

Nowadays thanks to europe if a diesel is built with a cat or egr and it is not present then its an instant fail. Since april this year I think. Im Not a tester but the info is out there.
