Mileage correction for Winter Tyres

Featured Replies

Winter tyre season is soon to be upon us, and I am changing from 17" to 16" rims.  I would like to get the correct speed/mileage/mpg displayed on the Maxi Dot.

What are the options to recalibrate the computer? What are the costs? Garage or DIY?  Anyone with experiences to share?

If you're switching from 17"/50 to 16"/60 there is no significant difference in the rolling circumference.  This has been discussed here recently, I believe.  Both sizes are shown on the 'pressures' label inside the fuel flap.

Impossible to do. Speedo drive is fixed and nothing to do with Maxidot.

As above, its only an issue depending on which size tyres you had before and what you have now. What size were your original tyres and what size are your winter ones?

I seemed to remember reading something about it in the VCDS forum. It seems that it is indeed possible to do this (within a certain range) through VCDS:

As the previous posters have already said, however, I doubt you will need to do this if you are changing between the standard sizes for the Yeti.

On my Maxi Dot I have a setting for tyres think it's +/- 5mph ( without looking )

Is this a speed warning for winter tyres ?

Yes, that is just a speed warning.

If you have a smartphone with GPS and a speedometer app (or indeed a sat-nav with speed display), just use that to calibrate your speedo.  It won't change the speedo, but at least you'll know what your indicated speed maps to on the road.    When you calibrate, make sure you are on a level and straight road.

IIRC the 16/60 winter tyres make the speedo read slightly more accurately compared to GPS and a roadside speed indicator.

I.e. At a true 30 mph on 17/50 tyres the speedo reads 33mph

With the 16/60 fitted, a true 30 mph gives a speedo reading close to 31 mph.

So with winter tyres fitted just treat the speedo as accurate and you'll be within the law.
