Need to change splash screen on Kenwood DNX521DAB

Featured Replies

Hello Guys

I have recently replaced the Bolero in my Yeti with a Kenwood DNX521DAB - vast improvement although I have also replaced the standard fit speakers.

I bought the Kenwood off a well known auction site - although it works fine it comes up with a "VW" start up screen. All part of the family I suppose, but I would prefer an official Skoda splash screen.

Does anyone know where to source the Skoda splash in the correct format and also how to change it on the Kenwood unit.

I did manage to find a site with the Skoda logos but they were in an ISO format and I couldn't get them to open.

I emailed Kenwood re the procedure but they didn't bother to reply.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Christopher

Hi Christopher

I've done this in the past - it's not too difficult.

Although it's not for the DNX521, it's the same process exactly. You'll recognise the screen shots on the one he's changing.

I do have a suitable image, but am not sure how to upload/attach it.  If I work it out, I'll put it up, otherwise, PM me and I'll email it over.

Hi Christoper- would you mind if I asked how much you paid for it?

Thanks,

Tom.

Hello Tom

I paid £668 (auction format) inc P&P

I have recently replaced the Bolero in my Yeti with a Kenwood DNX521DAB - vast improvement

I have the Kenwood DNX521DAB fitted to my Octavia but trading my car in so I will be removing it.

My replacement Skoda has the Bolero fitted in it as standard but no MFSW so I cannot control it that way.

In what way would you say it is a vast improvement over the Bolero if you don't mind me asking please?

Hi Red

Hope you don't mind me answering the question you asked.

I had a Columbus for a while and while I loved the look and style of the unit, I really couldn't get on with the sound quality. For me, this is the main reason for having a sound system in my car so I looked for alternatives. Having ruled out most of the alternatives, I picked the Kenwood and had it installed (well, I fitted it, but got someone to install the digital radio aerial). It is a fantastic unit in terms of sound quality, looks great (a bonus) and has a great number of features. The DAB is fantastic and I only lose signal when in the depths of the countryside. It is ipod compatible if you buy the appropriate cable (£30 from Kenwood, £10 for an identical copy on ebay) and the bluetooth works really well for me. The sat nav is Garmin so is a well proven version.

All in all, I'd say it is a lot of money but if you are looking for a well specced head unit which has great sound quality, it's a great choice.

The Bolero is a really good unit, but the sound quality and depth of features of the Kenwood is something else entirely. It has more connectivity options for adding to the ICE (pre-outs, sub-out etc), it has more audio and video playback options (iPod, USB, MicroSD, DVD, DiVX, DAB) and it has Sat Nav which in itself is a good reason to upgrade from the Bolero.

Even if you're not that interested in expanding the system beyond the headunit, you still have greater control over the sound quality with the Kenwood. While the Bolero has Bass, Mid and Treble adjustment, the Kenwood expands this greatly so you can really fine-tune the sound to your liking and get the best from even the factory fit speakers!

Then, of course, there is the integration with the optical parking system, reversing camera (if fitted, or you can add your own) and climate control, which is a nice thing to have as it keeps that 'stock' feeling.

Hello Plymouth Red

I guess the other 2 posters have more or less answered your question.

My thoughts on why I think the Kenwood unit is a "vast improvement":

1. Included Garmin Sat Nav (which is excellent by the way)

2. Included direct Ipod connection (with optional lead) - this was one of the main reasons I bought the Kenwood. I have a 160Gig Ipod Classic in the glove compartment permanently connected  - the Ipod can be effectively controlled via the Kenwood - either from the head unit itself or via steering wheel controls (on the Yeti)

3. Included Bluetooth telephone control - this works well. I don't know if the Bolero has this facility - if it has it wasn't fitted out in my Yeti.

4. The sound of the Kenwood is superior to the Bolero - even before I had replaced the standard Yeti speakers I noticed this as soon as I turned the Kenwood on.

5.The Kenwood includes a DAB tuner (with 15 presets) - the Bolero doesn't have DAB (at least mine didn't)

6. Asthetics - whilst the Bolero looks quite decent, IMHO the Kenwood looks better it - fits perfectly it doesn't stand out and looks fully integrated

The only thing which I think is missing from the Kenwood is the ability to stream music - but then again the Bolero doesn't have this either.

Hope this helps

Christopher

Thank you for the replies to my question appreciated.

Like I previously mentioned I have already got the Kenwood fitted in my 06 Octavia 'Obi One Skoda' which was done by my Skoda dealer but with my car being an older version a lot of the stuff wasn't compatible like the aircon display, reversing sensors and such which I understand they now may be?

In around an hours time I will be traded it in (PCP route) to be replaced by 'Obi One Skoda II' (Occy Mk III 2.0TDI CR SE) which has the new DAB version of the Bolero in so I think I will give the Bolero a 'trial run' but discuss the possibility of changing the unit over sometime to suit them as they did say that they would transfer it for me if required.

I will keep you posted.

Does your new Bolero have Bluetooth as well? If so, with that and DAB, your main benefits of upgrading to the Kenwood have reduced significantly. The time to look at upgrading would be when you're seriously looking for an improvement in audio quality.

The new Bolero does have Bluetooth which works very well with my phone and audio is very good

So RobM83 I think you may be right regarding transferring the unit to the new motor (See below as well) so it looks like I may have a 12 month old Kenwood DNX521 DAB for sale, with the replacement facia for an Octavia Mk II, over the coming weeks and of course first shout will be on this forum

Interestingly the Skoda technician who fitted my Kenwood to my old Octavia hasn't yet fitted one into a new Octavia Mk III so he sought advice from Skoda who 'think' that it may not fit

Bearing the latter in mind I said I would ask on here to see if anyone has had one fitted or fitted one themselves to the Mk III ??

As per my last post my Kenwood DNX521DAB is up for sale due to not being able to fit in the Mk III Occy in the Forum Shop  ;)
