Random cutting out?

Featured Replies

Octavia vRS, 2001 with mega miles but well maintained. Last year it wouldnt start first time had to be turned on and off couple of times to start. Had a fuel pump and relay replaced solving the issue.

Now it has a different issue, it'll randomly die, any speed, any temperature, on cruise control or not on cruise control totally random. Went nearly 2 hours the other day with no issues then randomly cut out 4 times in 15 min after that. When it dies, turn the ignition off and on couple of time and try to start it and off it goes again. Pulls well, no smoke etc etc.

Anyone had similar issues? No fault codes from vagcom when scanned.

Cheers

Matt

I'd start by checking the fuse tray on top of the battery for signs of overheating (literally to the extent of possibly looking melted). It may well not be right, but it's quick and free to check.

It is getting to that time of the year when all the electrics come on, was when mine melted. Was under an hour of reading a post on here about it too so I knew exactly what was wrong lol

Hi Matt,

I'd invest in some electrical contact spray cleaner and attack all the obvious ones as has been said, fuses and earthing points for the engine / wiring circuit. A rover car I had did exactly the same thing ie kept cutting out then ran with no problems etc I found it was a bad earth to the engine block.

Sorry guys, thought I'd update this, all be it late. Turned out it was the fuel pump at fault. I noticed of I filled up with fuel it would stop only cutting out when below 1/4 of a tank. New pump and its all good!

Cheers guys
