private plate transfer.

Featured Replies

hi all,i will be getting new car in jan,and will be transfering my private plate.dealer is charging me £105 when looking on the reciept,i thought it was £80 transfer fee,the £105 was for retention,which i dont need.or have dvla prices  gone up in the last 2 years? anybody help?cheers paul

Yes you are right it is £80 fees and £25 retention. If they can't move the plate from one car to another in one transaction then it will have to go on retention. Probably safer that way so the plate doesn't get lost. They may remove the private plate off the old car before the new car is registered so it still has to go on retention.

I have always had the new plate on for about a month and then added the private plate so never had the PP on from new.

Got my plate only a week ago. DVLA fee was £80

As per Welsh Kai Boy.

I went through this process recently for my new Superb.

I paid £105 to DVLA. This is the retention fee and includes allocation of a new number to the old car AND transfer of the retained number to the new car.

Hope this makes sense!

thanks kev,what was confusing me was when i traded my mondeo for the superb,it was the £80.this time im trading in my superb for a new one with the very same dealer,its£105.i never had anything to do with dvla as dealer did it for us.so i couldnt understand why put on retention at £25 more...

In the past dealers used to do all this for free, now started doing it myself as dealers (not just Skoda) are starting to charge the £80 DVLA fee and then adding on an admin fee which can bring the cost to £100 or more, so not always a case the number going on retention.

Hi. I put my private plate on retention for £105 and the dealer will put it straight on my new Superb which is in Germany at the moment waiting for a ferry.

My dealer advised doing it this way because all the DVLA local offices are closing at the beginning of December and going through the Post Office could mean a wait of up to three weeks for the paper work to come through.
