No sound from PC

Featured Replies

Was watching Youtube t'other day and the sound suddenly stopped working mid video, for no apparent reason.  Can't get anything now, no itunes, no sound effects (start up sound, shut down sound, email coming in) nothing!

I don't have a sound card, just motherboard on board sound.  Had the side off and can see nothing untoward.  So I'm assuming the sound part of the motherboard is goosed (don't know how to check it for certain)

Question is, if I bought a sound card and plugged it in it's appropriate slot, would it work, seeing as nothing is coming from the motherboard at the moment? Or am I looking at a new motherboard?

Windows 7, 8mb ram, 500gig hdd, AMD Athlon II X2 250 processor (3.00GHz)

TIA

Cheers, Trev

Have you tried system restore to a date before it broke ?

It's a Realtek high defination audio, the device is working normally, and the driver is upto date. I don't think there has been a windows update this week.

just done an uninstall, rebooted and 'puter searched for, and installed latest software, device is working properly, and driver is up to date, still no sound!!!!

You could try borrowing a sound card to test but don't forget to disable the onboard one first.

Thanks for that, I'll try that.

you havent muted sound by accident have you?

failing that if you install a soundcard it should work fine, might be something in the bios though, been a long time since ive used anything but onboard

No, not muted, it just went off all by itself, I wasn't even touching anything, just watching a music video (AWOLNATION- Sail).

I wouldn't know how to get to the bios, never mind alter something.

West Cumbia? I have 2 brothers in Maryport.

scaryport, just up the road lol

to get into the bios you press delete during the computers initial post (ie at the very start of it powering on) but if you dont know what it is id recommend staying away and seeing if anybody near you can help, you can do a lot of damage in there quite easily

what do you use to listen with, monitor speakers or stand alone ones? have you tested these with anything else? and also have you double checked all cables?

Onboard or PCI sound cards only supply the signal at "pre-amp" levels, what are you feeding the output into?? The problem probably lies there - with a blown output stage most likely.; try plugging a set of headphones into the PC sound output (with the sound set low).

^^^What he said. Trying headphones in the output to the amp socket. Also try connecting to AN Other amp/speakers setup.

Thanks GG & Vindaloo.

All very curious this!

I used the sound of the cards dealing on "spider solitare" to test this morning and still nothing. I then tried it again with headphones plugged into the output on the front of the base unit, and I could hear the cards. I unplugged the 'phones and tried again, and low and behold, the speakers are working again. This has got me stumped, but at least it's working normally again. I guess maybe there is an intermittant fault. Just checked and I-Tunes is working fine now too. YouTube is ok too.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

The audio runs through the headphone socket and disconnects the audio from the amp when the headphones are inserted and reconnects when removed.

Possibly a dodgy headphone socket/switch.

Possibly, although the front socket has hardly ever been used, speakers and headphones are plugged into a Y-lead in the back socket.

you could disconnect the front sockets if you think there dodgy, itll just be a connecter to the motherboard

google the motherboard if you dont have the handbook for it, the motherboard details are usually between the card sockets in big lettering

Glad you got it sorted.
