2nd opinion on mate's Passat offer

Featured Replies

Mate currently has a Mazda 6 (07). 135k on the clock and lots of serious issues. Needing 3 maybe 4 figures spent on it right now.

He's been offered a Passat CR170 tdi Highline saloon for a cost-to-change of just under £10k. His mate is a sales manager at a large dealership and has flagged this car to him.

Passat is on a 60 plate, 35k miles, FSH and is coming from a VAG dealer with a year's warranty. Highline spec is fully loaded with leather satnav etc. My mate quizzed me over the phone and away from the internet but I thought that sounded quite a decent deal.

Told him to check if the injector recall had been done but I wasn't sure that applied to the CR.

Decent offer yes?

Mazda is diesel and looks like every mile was a hard one.

Yep, Highlines are stupidly common. Loads of spec but to me, the seats look as if they were a Friday afternoon job. Leather should be flat and smooth and every Highline I've ever seen the leather is creased and looks loose fitting.

£10k for one doesn't seem cheap at all...

Having a quick look on Autotrader 10k for a 170 isn't that bad up here. On paper he was being offered £1250 for the Mazda and the same off the cars list of £12000, so he was getting it for £9500.

He texted me this morning to say that they all really like it and he's going to buy it. He says it's just for a few years and hopefully he'll get a partnership at his business and a car with it.

I'm not going to rain on his parade. I told him he'll have to look after it or it'll look like sh17 within 6 months.

I can confirm the 170 CR WAS technically subject to the recall as VW brought ours in for inspection in 2010. I'm not sure it was ever officially called a recall (customer satisfaction drive?) but the car was brought in and checked. Worth making sure they've had it in and had it looked at.

Considering the car is three years old the price seems about right and the mileage seems quite reasonable for its age/ price. I can only speak as I find and ours has been a crushingly capable car over six years and 90,000 miles. The interior is still well held together despite three kids and two dogs (one that gets car sick) and even though its getting long in the tooth it still looks good and feels good to be in. Shall be sad to see it leave us next year.
