power steering pump location?

Featured Replies

Had problems with power steering. Spent some "quality time" with my fabia earlier just to get to the cap to top up fluid as light on dash has been on for 3 days finally got round to it. However after all the messing around with taking battery out and box casing etc topped up drove round a bit light is still on... so what do you guys think next, pump? Which I cant see obviously, where is located? :)

Is the power steering still working? Low battery voltage can put the light on and I recall corroded terminals can also cause the light to come on. Have a look in the Fabia 1 useful topic

Here's a pic of it sitting next to (inboard of) the screenwash reservoir. In front of nearside front wheel:

Topic moved to fabia section.

the power steering pump is directly underneath the steering fluid reservoir, it's a stupid place for it quite frankly, to get to it you need to remove the front bumper... It's not a conventional belt driven pump, it is an electrically operated pump, it's quite common for the electrical connections to get corroded or come loose, it's worth giving them a clean, also it's fairly common for a failing battery to cause a power steering light to come on too because the steering pump puts a huge drain on the battery especially when the car is moving at low speeds.. The other common ailment they have is the steering angle sensor on the back of the steering column failing..

tbh I would get the fault codes read from the steering controller first, it would give you a much better idea of where to start looking for the fault.

thank you 'trundelnut, ive just read your pm :)

Yep definite strain on my battery as went to start at dinner time and was dead. Strange as was fine straight away after messing around with it last night and normal his morning but dead at midday? I loved my fabia but my first hate now is where skoda chose to put the power steering pump and filler cap :(

you need to sort that before getting into serious expense with the power steering    at least 24-36 hour charge    the days have gone when starting the engine  meant the battery must be OK     "they" should have programmed the PS system to kick off once it saw the alternator drive the volts up on starting   not at the same time    --can be helped by waiting another 5-6 seconds after the glow plug light has gone out before starting on a cold morning

Most people don't realise that in cold weather, the glowplugs stay on for up to 180s after the engine starts and the light goes out (the post-heat duration depends on temperature). The light going out only indicates that the pre-heat period has ended - not that the glowplugs have switched off.

In the UK, the post-heat duration is typically less than a minute. In cold weather, it is a good idea to wait this long before moving off to give the oil time to flow through all the galleries. The steering is far less likely to put on the light when the battery is low if you do this.

yes,  if it's either current control via the PTC filament or the newer voltage control  the "power requirement" past the Lamp Off point  is less,   a short pause before hitting a sickly battery with  the starter motor and power steering almost simultaneously will help in practice,  even if my electrical theory is a little rusty--------------however     did  you get the problem sorted yet?

She's had a new battery yesterday. Problem isn't solved but I do know what is wrong now. So after going through topping up p.s.f (in a stupid place i may add) new battery. Checked sensors. Code reader coming up with nothing. I now know what is wrong after having it up on the ramps. Previous owner must have abused car as some how casing for pump is all cracked and broken some duct tape on it all wires split and a tiny but noticeable from underneath oil leak. Not particularly a major job but having to strip it all back to replace it all I haven't got the time.

sorry to hear that  -  wonder how they did that--some right muppets about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are in need of a replacement I have one, just give us a shout
