People with lowering springs request...

Featured Replies

Im currently running weitec coilovers but the ride for me is just a little to harsh, and makes taking the in laws out abit embarrassing! Most the time its ok but its the times that you have to go down abit of a un loved road that its noticable.

So thinking of making the switch to lowering springs and shocks. I know it will still be a firmer ride but im hoping it will be just that little bit better.

But the only worry is getting the ride height right for looks as that's why i went with coilovers in the first place.

So the request is for a measurement from the middle of the wheel(centre cap) to the arch front and rear and what springs you are running.

Thank you in advance :)

On the mk1 options are limited. H&R are highly recommended for ride quality but some say don't use them with standard shocks as the ride can be bouncy. Others say they are fine. However, they only give you 20mm lowering so that might not be enough for you. I considered all options including coilovers, but I wanted to keep it comfortable ( getting old!! ) its still a family car. In the end I went for cobra lowering springs but I had some issues with these. It really wasn't straight forward fitting. I started a thread on this a while back and as usual got loads of help and advice and some good ideas. I'll try and put a link up for you. Hope it helps.

Its been a job but I'm happy with it. The ride is a little firmer but its still a nice comfortable family car. Height wise its now sitting ( after two weeks) from floor to arch 63 1/2 cm front 64cm rear. So its fairly level.

personally my friend the option you went is whole load of work buddy. I am well impressed you persevered.

i would not recommend that to the OP though and to just get the shocks and springs that are intended for it.

Sorry have no measurements but I ran Weitecs for few years and hated the crashy ride they gave. mind you i am running very low stance. I went with KW's in the end coz i needed a better rebound.

I have had over 6 different suspension set ups on mine to get to where it is now

It depends on if you want to lower or keep near std height

if you want comfort and near std ride then actually buying new std shocks and springs in not a bad option as  most VRS std suspension will of had it by now anyway.

Another option for near std height but good comfort and cheap option is to add H&R springs to std shocks . This is a very good option but means you need your std shock still. (which you might not have) Also as H&R are a uprated spring they will not work well with tired old std shocks. So you either need good low miles shocks or get replacement std ones or uprated  Koni shocks which are next option and extremely good combination with the H&R's.

H&R's lower by approx 15 to 20mm.

or you can go weitec/KW springs and shocks .

This depends on your budget though.

Even pro sport coilovers at near std ride heght get great reviews and not crashy

I got some Koni sport with matched lowering springs from larkspeed for £250...I'm very impressed. Dunno how they will compare to the standard VRS stuff to tell the truth as mine is a TDI.

Yeah I agree bowders if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have started it. Its been a pain. I seriously considered pro sport coilovers. At the height I wanted I think these would have better as it would have saved loads of hassle.

Thanks for the posts guys.

Im not running a super low stance at the most so that's by I was hoping to make the switch and gain comfort without losing the looks!

Bowders I've looked at all the options that you have suggested. I do have standard shocks but they have done 70k so would replace if used. The H&Rs where always an option but IMO the standard height is a little arse heavy so would prefer a bigger drop on the front.

The option I'm looking at at the most is the weitec 55\35mm kit. Which on a vrs should be 35\40mm front the 15\20mm rear. Only thing that worries me is the front will be too low.

Can anyone measure the height from centre cap to arch on a standard car please?

What sized wheels are you running and tyre pressures? I've been running weitec's for nearly a year and they haven't been harsh at all, like an audi on sports suspension.

Running 18s 225/40/18s standard pressures 31/32 psi.

They are not terrible and on a good road are fine but when you get on anything but a good road they do bounce and bump about.

For coilovers they arnt that bad but if i can make the ride better then it would just make it more enjoyable to own!

KWv3 fantastic comfort and handling. Adjustable in every way. Worth every penny IMO.

Best and cheapest way is to go down to 16" wheels and it will be sorted :)
