which oil? confused

Featured Replies

just read a post on here that says, 5w30 oil can cause top end and turbo wear due to low oil pressure and that using 5w40 would prevent this problem. Im now confused as I spoke to the service department at my local Skoda dealer and they said I must use a 5w30 long life oil in my Octavia 1.6 tdi cr as its fitted with a DPF. Whats your thoughts

You need oil which meets vw 507.00 spec.

use the spec on the rear of the can 507.00 spec oil will be fine in any brand.

I used Q8 5/30 V long life in 507.00 spec in the Yeti TDI and the Fabia TSI

If the car is under warranty or on variable service intervals you need to use the proper spec oil.  If it's on fixed intervals OR if you do interim changes on the variable interval, you have more flexibility as a lot of oils meet the alternative VW fixed interval specification.  Just bear in mind that using 0W40 or whatever will probably invalidate the warranty in the unlikely event that there is an engine failure, such as a timing chain jumping (although 0W40 wouldn't cause this).

With longlife oil, protection of the DPF isn't as important as the anti-wear additives needed to keep it going for 18,000 miles between changes.  Really these service intervals are designed to keep fleet managers happy, because the car may well only go for one service in 3 years, not three.  Engine life is a secondary consideration.

VW/Skoda state that 507.00 is required for cars with a dpf as it is low ash.

so if you've had a dpf delete any 5w/30 will do?

Must be dim. Can't see if the recommended oils for my car meet the VW specs.

It still needs to meet the VW spec but most do.

Thats because the ECP website isn't very helpful.

If its a pd then 505.01 spec will probably be ok, not sure about cr engines.

The 507 stuff is also ok. That's what the Skoda garage in Germany told me to buy and also what the Globus supermarket had listed in their book for PDs.

Basically a higher spec backwards compatible.

If you have no DPF then you can get away with a 505.01 oil, but only if you are on a fixed time/distance regime. If on a variable service regime then 507.00 oil must be used as it is also long life oil as well as being low ash/

I've always wondered why they stated specific oil.

I personaly service my car every 10k

I will be servicing the engine every 8000 miles. So will 5w30 long life oil be sufficient?

As has been mentioned, the only numbers you need to look at are the specs on the back of the bottle.

For your 1.6 TDi CR105 you need VW 507.00 oil.

As long as it meets 507.00 or 505.01 if you don't have a dpf.
