Cleaning summer wheels

Featured Replies

So its November and time to switch to winter rubber.

Before I put the summer rims to bed on their tree for the winter I always give them a good clean.

This year I tried a new approach.

I mixed some snow foam juice with about 50% as much again of water and applied the resultant goo to the wheels with a fairly stiff paint brush.

Leave it for about 5 mins and then wash off with copious amounts of fresh water and a microfibre cloth.

Dry with another MF Cloth and leave whilst doing the rest.

Apply poorboys wheel sealer and buff to a nice slippery shiny finish.

Before I put them back on again in the spring I'll give them another treatment of Poorboys.

I have found that this makes cleaning easier during the season and come the next swap round brake dust is easily removed.

Much better

Yes I'll be doing similar when my summers come off in a few weeks.

Does make them easier to clean too, no doubt - I'd never run wheels without any wax/sealant protection on them, saves so much time cleaning them.

Try some Iron X or similar as well....and de tarring is essential too

hhhhmmmm - my procedure is

Take off dirty alloys + summer tyres and fit dirty alloys from last year + winter tyres on

Put into garage

Come spring

Fit still dirty alloys back on again........

(I figure one mile of dirty road and you're back at square one anyway!)

Why bother to reply?

BTW.....You missed the final sentence.....

".......walk into dirty house...then take off dirty clothes,  go to bed in dirty sheets....because in a week or two..back to square one again! :wall:

Hardly seems worth the laborious trek into the car care section just to post that.

But I see your point, and in the end we all should remember that cars with faded swirly paint work covered in RDS always sell better than clean shiny ones with immaculate paint, because none of us give a stuff.

Gosh what a waste of time detailing your car is

Be boring if we were all the same I suppose.... :)

Being back to square one after a mile is a bit melodramatic, but if that's your opinion

  • 2 weeks later...

Gave mine the one over with some tar remover, wow the microfiber towel I used is now filthy I had no idea how much tar was splatted all over the inside of the alloys!

Next step Iron-x (got to buy some)

Some Autoglym SRP to reduce scratches etc

Panel wipe

g-Techniq C5 (bit extravagant!)

Getting stuff super clean is proving addictive, step back and grin.

What exactly does `Panel wipe` mean?

Thanks.

Mike.

Its a solvent based cloth designed to remove any contaminants that will affect the adhesion of Sealer...or Paint

I use IPA

Reminds me of a saying my Dad used to say " Only dirty people wash!"
