New NIKON Df - retro look

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Reminds me of my first Nikkormat in the days before electronics. Quite different to my current Nikon bodies, but I quite like it.

Any opinions on it?

Technically I am sure it does the job, otherwise, I am not sure.

I love my cameras and my 'Spottie' is pure nostalgia, however, the DSLR is a tool. I know other people think differently but i do not 'get' an FM3 (?) body with a sensor. To buy a FM£ is to load 36 frames and make them count, the smell of film....that stuff. :)

I'm really disappointed by the price of it. It lacks all the things that make a camera expensive (build, durable shutter, AF system) but costs 3/4 the price of a D4.

It's a real shame as it looks to be the perfect camera for low light shooting otherwise.

Hi guys!

I just hope that this is the first step to a downsized D4 so that we finally get a "D4 light", just as my D700 was a D3 light. If that was released for 50% of the D4 price I would line up immediately, pre-order it or whatever it would take to get one the first day it became available!! I just don't happen to like the D800, I find it sluggish and uninspireing for my photography. And I do not need the 36 MP ...

... but to answer the original question, I kind of like the retro style of the Df but I miss both the ergonomics of a modern durable housing, really up to job AF, speed, and so on. ... As I said, looking forward to the "D4 light" in a modern body.

Have a nice weekend!

I doubt we'll see another D700 like camera, it was a stopgap to fill out their FX line until eventually they could use different sensors as they have done now with the Sony sensors in the D600 and D800.  A D700-like camera doesn't make sense now when they have cheaper sensors they can use from Sony and they can separate the D800 so it's less likely to rob sales from the D4 as the D700 did to the D3.  I say that as a D700 owner who hasn't bought a D800, the D700 has been the most impressive camera I've used as it's amazing in so many ways even years after I bought it, I'd love to see a proper successor but just don't think we'll see it.  Aside from the additional cost of the D4, I wouldn't want the additional bulk as I'm not fussed about the portrait grip.

Clearly there is a market for retro styling which Leica have survived on and Fuji have very much revived their fortunes with but the Df doesn't really appeal to me, the D4 sensor does but mixed with the D600 AF is of no interest.

I am inclined to agree, although I like the look, I think I will stay with my D700 and trusty old D2X.

i like the look, but that's about it... that being said, it's a lovely full-frame sensor that could achieve good results, but the D610 will also do a fantastic job at being full-frame, for less monies... and i don't think i could be bothered (or have the time, the way i shoot) to get used to the dials! - as i'm a manual man, the front and rear jog-wheels do me fine!

I'm waiting for a D4s / x to be honest - my current line up for of D3 & D3s (For my location work) and D3x (for studio and commercial) do me fine!
